10-17-2013 Ohio:
CIRCLEVILLE — A man arrested on charges of pandering obscenities involving a minor in July was found dead at his East Mound Street home Thursday, the victim of an apparent suicide.
Jack D. Hensley Jr., 28, was pronounced dead at 3:59 p.m. Thursday at Berger Hospital after attempts to resuscitate him failed, according to Chief Wayne Gray, Circleville Police.
Gray said a member of Hensley’s family notified police Thursday that they feared he would harm himself and were looking for him. When they returned home, they found Hensley unresponsive in the garage.
Gray said he had rigged a charcoal grill inside his vehicle inside the closed garage, and investigators believe he died from inhaling the fumes, similar to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Hensley was arrested July 12 after reportedly being discovered with child pornography downloaded onto his computer. He was indicted by the Pickaway County Grand Jury in September and pleaded not guilty to pandering obscenity involving a minor.
A pretrial hearing was held Oct. 11 in Pickaway County Common Pleas Court, but no further details on the status of his case were available Thursday. ..Source.. by Trish Bennett Editor

Suspect commits suicide
9-3-2011 Colorado:Police found the body of Duane A. Smith, 46, of Fountain on Phantom Canyon Road.
CANON CITY — Police confirmed a child sex assault suspect was found dead Thursday after he failed to show for an interview with authorities on Wednesday.
Duane A. Smith, 46, had just been suspended from his job as a Junior ROTC instructor at Canon City High School pending a police investigation into his alleged relationship with a 16-year-old female student.
"Investigators believe that Smith took his own life after he missed a scheduled interview with investigators about his relationship with the student. Smith failed to return home after his initial contact with police and authorities feared that he may become suicidal," said Capt. Allen Cooper of the Canon City Police Department.
Dr. Dorothy Twellman, Fremont county coroner, said Smith died of carbon monoxide poisoning. He was found by a hiker about 1 p.m. Thursday inside his red Pontiac Grand Am on a turnout along Fremont County Road 67, known as the Phantom Canyon Road.
A note was also located in the vehicle, Cooper said.
Before Smith had been found, a $25,000 arrest warrant was issued accusing him of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.
Smith had worked as an ROTC instructor at the high school for the past two years, said Superintendent of Canon City Schools Robin Gooldy in a letter issued Thursday to parents of Canon City High School students.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit authored by Canon Police Detective Derek Irvine, the sister of the 16-year-old student victim reported to a school official that her sister admitted to cheating on her boyfriend.
"She could not tell who she was cheating on her boyfriend with, as he was too old, and he would get in trouble, according to a summarization of a police interview with the sister. However, under pressure when asked if the older man was Smith, the victim admitted to her sister that it was.
The victim told her sister that the two had sex twice in the supply closet in the Canon City High School ROTC room and twice in the woods when she went camping with Smith and his family, according to the affidavit. The victim reportedly told her sister the two had sex three more times between Aug. 10 and Saturday.
The affidavit indicated Smith allegedly would pick up the victim to take her to school early in the morning for drill team practice and that arrangement had been occurring "since the second semester of last year." The affidavit also indicated that Smith offered to tutor the victim and helped her improve, "really bad math grades," to a B average.
The affidavit also indicated the victim admitted to the relationship during a pre-text phone call between her and a friend on Sunday.
The victim later told police that she and Smith did not have sex more than three times but he asked her not to tell anyone about the relationship because he would get in trouble. She also told police that she loved Smith and believed he loved her, according to the affidavit. ..Source.. by TRACY HARMON
'Horrific' Child Sex Abuse Investigation Linked To Dead Fireman
8-9-2011 Washington:It appears a veteran Pierce County firefighter killed himself rather than face a police investigation into the repeated molestation of his adopted daughters.
KIRO Team 7 Investigators have discovered that 48-year-old Lt. Scott D. Hamrick of Eatonville, committed suicide by carbon monoxide on June 30 inside a horse trailer at the family's ranch. Police documents say Hamrick left a note, saying he was "afraid he would be going to prison."
After a confidential source informed Investigative Reporter Chris Halsne that Hamrick was under police investigation for sexual abuse of children at the time of his death, KIRO Team 7 Investigators contacted Central Pierce County's Fire Chief, Doug Willis. He confirmed that a detective had been talking with him and others within the department regarding some "particularly disturbing allegations" especially because Hamrick and his wife had been involved with foster and special needs kids.
Chief Willis shared with KIRO 7 Eyewitness News a resignation letter sent to him by Hamrick June 23 which states, "Personal issues have caused me to tender my resignation to the department effective immediately. I have enjoyed my time with the department and sincerely regret having to leave. Please list my reasons as personal only with no contact to be made. (Signed) Scott Hamrick ," Station 68 A-shift." Hamrick had worked at for Central District Fire and Rescue for 27 years.
A few months ago, an adopted foster daughter of the Hamricks was arrested by Eatonville police on accusations that she stole an iPod or iPod Touch. At first, the girl claimed she used the stolen item to send text messages to friends, claiming she had been molested by her father, Scott Hamrick. Police never investigated the claim, though. Eatonville Mayor Ray Harper told KIRO 7 the reason was that the girl recanted her accusation while being interviewed by an officer.
"Our officer was involved, he did arrest her, she did go to Remann Hall (where the juvenile court is located)," Harper said. "She had told the officer that she was just looking for attention from her friends and denied it to the officer."
But law enforcement sources told KIRO 7 the police interview of the girl took place with the Hamricks in the same room. Only then did the girl claim the texts were all lies.
KIRO 7 learned that the Department of Social and Health Services also may have been notified of the molestation claims.
DSHS spokesperson Sherry Hill would only confirm that the Hamrick's were licensed foster parents from October 1997 to September 2004. She said DSHS can't confirm any investigation because the case involves a juvenile.
In Eatonville, there are still questions about what could have been done differently, now that the allegations against Scott Hamrick are being investigated by the Pierce County Sheriff's Office.
Asked if Eatonville officials would be looking into their handling of the case, Harper said, "Oh, most certainly. We always look at our procedures if something we feel wasn't followed through."
Pierce County Sheriff's spokesperson Ed Troyer asked that KIRO 7 hold off reporting on our findings for a few days because his detectives are "going to be making some arrests." Troyer described the case as "disgusting and horrific," but ongoing. Troyer indicated that the sexual abuse involved more than just Hamrick.
A Facebook page, run by Hamrick's wife, Drewanne, says she and Scott had five daughters and three sons. ..Source.. by Chris Halsne, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News Investigative Reporter

Former Baptist camp director charged with abuse found dead
5-25-2010 Virginia:
HERTFORD, N.C. (ABP) -- A former director of a North Carolina Baptist camp who was awaiting trial on six child-sex charges was found dead of an apparent suicide May 24.
A newspaper in Hertford, N.C., quoted the sheriff of Perquimans County as confirming that Stephen Carter, former director of Cale Retreat and Conference Center in Hertford from 2002 until his arrest last July, was found dead in a vehicle in Virginia Beach, Va., apparently from carbon-monoxide poisoning.
Carter was found in his parked truck on land he owns in Virginia. Margie Hobbs, public information officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department, said the wooded property on which Carter was found in the 4800 block of Blackwater Road is listed in his name.
Carter, 51, was out of jail on $80,000 bond on two counts each of engaging in sexual activities with a child, felony first-degree sex offense of a child and felony indecent liberties with a child. If convicted of the most serious offense he could have faced life in prison.
After his arrest Carter was placed on administrative leave by the camp, operated by Chowan Baptist Association in northeastern North Carolina. As a condition of his arrest he was banned from the property of the camp and from having any contact with anyone under 18 except for his son. The association hired an interim director in January to run this summer's camping season.
Police accused Carter of sex offenses involving three separate minors. Carter told local media he was innocent. Survivors include Carter's wife of 26 years, Grayce, and two children. Carter reportedly had attended the high school graduation ceremony for his son the day before he took his life.
Before taking over as director of the camp, Carter served as a Southern Baptist missionary in Belize from 1997 to 2001 through short-term appointment with the International Mission Board. At the time of his arrest an IMB spokesperson said the agency, which has a zero-tolerance policy regarding child sexual abuse, had no knowledge of any allegation of abuse by Carter made prior to 2009.
"A suicide is always a tragedy, and my heart goes out to Rev. Carter’s family," said Christa Brown, Baptist outreach director for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. "I also pray for the children and families who made the allegations."
Brown, who has called for the Southern Baptist Convention to develop a system for reporting and handling allegations of clergy sexual abuse, said the convention "should conduct a professional assessment of the allegations and should pro-actively reach out to provide assistance to any who may have been wounded, whether here in the United States or in Belize, where Carter previously worked for the International Mission Board." ..Source.. by Bob Allen

DE- State trooper charged with sexual extortion commits suicide in Smyrna
5-27-2009 Delaware:Delaware State Police Cpl. Joshua A. Giddings, 32, apparently committed suicide at his Smyrna home Tuesday, May 26. Giddings was arrested May 11 after an investigation revealed he engaged in sexual relations with a woman he had arrested in exchange for not taking her to court.
Delaware State Police reported that emergency personnel were dispatched at about 6 p.m., to a home in the unit block of Wheeler Circle in Smyrna after receiving a report of an unresponsive man.
The man was found in the shed at the residence. He was unresponsive. Emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
He was identified as Joshua A. Giddings.
Foul play is not suspected, police said. The incident is a suspected suicide, but the investigation is continuing by the Smyrna Police Department.
PREVIOUS STORY:
Delaware State Police Cpl. Joshua A. Giddings, 32, who was assigned to Troop 9 in Odessa, was arrested by the DSP May 11 after an investigation revealed he engaged in inappropriate sexual relations with a 39-year-old New Castle woman while he was acting in his official capacity as a trooper March 19.
Delaware State Police Superintendent Col. Thomas F. Mac Leish held a press conference regarding the incident Monday, May 11.
“The charges against Mr. Giddings represent a very serious breach of the trust that is so vital to the relationship between the citizens and the police in a free society,” he said. “I am repulsed by the actions of which Mr. Giddings is accused.
“Those actions are in no way representative of the men and women of the Delaware State Police, both uniformed and civilian, who go to work every day with the singular goal of providing high quality law enforcement services to the residents and visitors of our state,” MacLeish said. “As public servants empowered with a great deal of authority, I firmly believe, as do my fellow troopers, that these actions cannot and will not be tolerated.”
The arrest of Giddings, a seven-year veteran patrol trooper of the DSP, culminates an investigation by DSP of alleged misconduct brought to the DSP’s attention by the woman.
The woman alleged that she and Giddings engaged in a sexual act while he was in the process of arresting her.
Information was provided and the investigation later substantiated that on March 19 at approximately 8:06 pm, Giddings was working in a patrol capacity when he was dispatched to JC Penney’s at the Christiana Mall for a report of a female shoplifter in custody.
The investigation determined that Giddings arrested the woman for a single count of shoplifting and for capias charges from a local court related to traffic offenses. The woman and Giddings agreed that if the woman performed a sexual favor that Giddings would not take her to court to face the shoplifting charges and capiases. Instead, he issued her a criminal summons to appear at a later date in court.
With the woman under arrest and detained in the police car, Giddings drove to a nearby secluded area and engaged in a sexual act with her. Giddings took her home in the police car.
Once DSP was notified of this allegation, an investigation was immediately launched and Giddings was suspended with pay and benefits. During the investigation, detectives secured a clothing item belonging to the victim, which was found to contain traces of seminal fluid. Consequently, detectives later obtained a search warrant to obtain DNA from Giddings.
The physical evidence obtained by detectives from the victim’s clothing and the DNA sample obtained from Giddings were sent to the Delaware Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for comparison. The two samples matched the DNA profile of Giddings and supported the allegation brought forth.
Arrest warrants were obtained and Giddings was informed of the arrest warrant. He voluntarily turned himself in May 11 to investigators at Troop 2 in Newark.
He was charged with sexual extortion – felony, receiving a bribe – felony, and official misconduct – misdemeanor, and upon arraignment, was issued an $8,000 unsecured bond.
Because of the arrest, Mac Leish has placed Giddings on suspension without pay and benefits with the intent to dismiss him from the division.
Mac Leish stressed that Giddings is an aberration and will be held accountable for his actions, both criminally and internally within the DSP.
“I share the same frustration as my fellow troopers and colleagues as we collectively try to comprehend why someone would choose to violate the public’s trust and tarnish the uniform so proudly worn by Delaware State Troopers for more than 86 years,” he said. “I will ensure a thorough review is completed surrounding the facts and circumstances of this incident to determine whether any measures can be taken to ensure this type of transgression does not happen again.”
Mac Leish said the investigation is ongoing. ..Source.. by Smyrna/Clayton Sun-Times
AR- Suicide suspected in deaths of couple
12-11-2005 Arkansas:RO GERS — A couple charged this week with myriad child-sex crimes, including incest and child pornography, committed suicide in their home Saturday evening, Rogers police said.
According to the police, Joe Billy Canoy, 41, and Shawna Lee Anne Canoy, 32, were found dead of suspected asphyxiation after a neighbor, thinking something was wrong, broke down the home’s door.
The neighbor found the Canoys inside a vehicle in the garage about 5 p. m., said Kelley Cradduck, spokesman for the Rogers Police Department.
“It’s pretty clear-cut,” Cradduck said. “We don’t believe there is any foul play.”
Cradduck wouldn’t say if police found a suicide note.
IL- Accused sex offender's death ruled a suicide
9-12-2008 Illinois:PEKIN - A Tazewell County Coroner's Jury ruled Thursday that the death of an accused child molester was a suicide.
Brad A. Mason, 48, of 1506 S. Capitol St., Pekin, was found dead against the door inside his detached garage about 10:40 a.m. July 23. An autopsy and toxicology reports indicated that he died of carbon monoxide toxicity with a level of 81 percent in his blood stream, said Tazewell County Coroner Dennis Conover. He said 35 percent saturation is typically enough to kill most people.
Pekin police detective Rick Von Rohr said Mason had hooked a drier hose up to the tailpipe of his car and then placed the other end inside the car. His body was found against a regular-size entryway door at the back of the garage as if he were trying to leave the garage and collapsed, Von Rohr said.
Inside the car were pictures of loved ones, a cell phone, a one-hitter cannabis pipe and other personal keepsake items, said Von Rohr.
Von Rohr said that he was notified on July 22 that a 15-year-old girl had told her boyfriend that Mason was fondling her. The boyfriend went to Mason's home and confronted him and yelling ensued. Mason forbid the boy to return to the house.
The girl then told her mother, Mason's girlfriend, that Mason had been touching her. The woman filed for an order of protection and then left the home to stay with a family member, said Von Rohr. Officers were dispatched to the home on July 23 to serve the order of protection on Mason, which would have required him to leave the home. The girlfriend was there and told police she could not open the garage door.
Von Rohr had arrived to search the home. When the girlfriend retrieved the garage door opener from the house and opened the door, officers found Mason. The car key was still in the on position but the car had run out of gas. The small detached garage, he said, would have filled quickly with fumes.
Von Rohr said neighbors last saw Mason at about 10 to 10:30 p.m. on July 22 when he backed his car into the garage - which they said was unusual because he never parked the car in the small garage.
While investigating in the house, detectives found three messages on the answering machine. The last message was from Mason, left at 12:01 a.m., which said, "I didn't do what she said. I love you forever. Don't go into the garage. Let someone else go in." Von Rohr said Mason sounded very upset on the message.
Von Rohr said he never had the chance to question Mason or his 15-year-old accuser. He had not been charged with any crime. Mason's death closed the case, he said. Mason had no previous record of sexual abuse, said Von Rohr. ..News Source.. by Sharon Woods Harris

Man kills self after child sex charge
Authorities say alleged victim was not a student at Romeo Elementary, where man worked as teacher
1-11-2008 Florida:
A Marion County man was found dead Wednesday of an apparent suicide - the same day that Levy County authorities issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of child molestation.
Randolph Coke Markham, who taught third grade at Romeo Elementary, died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a shed behind a relative's house in Morriston, authorities said. Inside the shed, Levy deputies found notes that Markham wrote proclaiming his innocence.
Markham, 28, faced a charge of engaging in sexual activity with a child younger than 12, sheriff's spokesman Lt. Evan Sullivan said.
Sullivan and Marion County School Board spokesman Kevin Christian both said that the victim was not one of Markham's students and that the crimes occurred away from school.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement received a complaint that Markham molested a child from 1999 to 2003.
The Marion School Board placed Markham on paid administrative leave in October, Christian said.
"Any time there are allegations of this nature, we take these actions," he said.
Sullivan said Markham knew about the warrant.
Markham had an attorney who had asked, if charges were filed, to be contacted. The lawyer would then arrange to have Markham turn himself in.
"That's not out of the ordinary," if the person is not an escape risk or a threat to the community, Sullivan said.
When Markham didn't show up when he was supposed to turn himself in, people began searching for him.
The body was found in a shed behind 7850 S.E. 175th Ave. in Morriston. Authorities say Markham hooked up pipes from a vehicle into the building, closed up and locked the structure, then pumped carbon monoxide inside.
Fumes were so thick that the person who discovered him also was overcome and fell to the ground, Sullivan said. A 911 call was made from the residence at 1:29 p.m. When rescuers arrived, they found Markham and the person who discovered him in the shed. Markham could not be revived.
Markham began teaching at Romeo Elementary in August 2006. He grew up near Romeo, where many of his family and friends live.
Romeo resident Nita Brass said she knew Markham all his life.
"He was always laughing, always having fun," Brass said of Markham. "He was as nice to talk to as anybody."
"I knew he had run into some bad problems," she said. "I guess he just couldn't take it." ..more.. by Joe VanHoose may be reached at joe.vanhoose@starbanner.com or at 352-867-4124.

Convicted sex offender found dead in vehicle
3-13-2007 Iowa:
When Urbandale police seized a computer from his mother's home earlier this year, Robert Putney Jr. told an officer he had no intention of returning to prison, where he'd spent years as a convicted sex abuser. On Monday - the same day he was to have been questioned further by Urbandale police in connection with an investigation into alleged child pornography - Putney's body was found in a car near downtown Des Moines. The 40-year-old registered sex offender apparently gassed himself with chemicals in a car at 18th and High streets.
Police said he apparently combined some chemicals in a container in the car and rolled up the windows. He was found dead about 7:40 a.m. Putney lived at a downtown Des Moines motel but sometimes visited his mother's home in Urbandale. He is listed on the Iowa Sex Offender Registry as living at the Randolph Hotel in downtown Des Moines. Police earlier this year confiscated a computer from his mother's house in an investigation into alleged child pornography.
Passers-by on Monday found him unresponsive in the car and called for help. Rescue workers determined he was dead. A bucket of clear liquid was found on a folded-down back seat, officials said. Putney worked as a night janitor in a building near where his vehicle was discovered. Putney was sentenced to a 15-year prison term in August 1992 for sex-related charges involving teenage boys. He pleaded guilty to two counts of lascivious acts with a child, enticing away a child, lascivious conduct with a minor and third-degree sexual abuse.
This year's investigation in Urbandale did not include accusations of physical contact, officials said In the 1992 investigation, officials received help from one of the victims. Then-Assistant Polk County Attorney Melodee Hanes praised a 12-year-old boy who tape-recorded a conversation he had with Putney. In the conversation, Putney allegedly discussed sexual acts and indicated money could be obtained for the acts. "Because of this child who was smart enough to report to police investigators when approached by Mr. Putney, we were able to obtain a search warrant to Putney's house that led to discovery of a list with a dozen names of children," Hanes said in 1992. "This led us to other children Mr. Putney had attempted to solicit for sexual conduct."
Police said Putney used a child friend to meet young boys in the early 1990s, primarily at the Skate East roller rink at 2220 E. Ovid Ave. An autopsy will be conducted today to determine Putney's cause of death. "I've heard that chemicals were involved," Polk County Medical Examiner Dr. Gregory Schmunk said Monday afternoon. "But we are in the very early stages of the investigation. We will know a lot more tomorrow." ..more.. by Tom Alex can be reached at (515) 284-8088 or talex@dmreg.com

Man in Bucks County sex case commits suicide
9-25-2007 Pennsylvania
A former substitute teacher awaiting sentencing for sexually assaulting two teenage girls has committed suicide, authorities said.
Jeffrey Anderson, 23, of Philadelphia, asphyxiated himself with a gas stove in a closed room on Saturday, authorities said.
His parents, who had traveled to Philadelphia with other family members to spend a week with Anderson before his sentencing, found his body, said his defense attorney Sara Webster.
Anderson was to be sentenced Friday in Bucks County Court, and faced a minium sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison.
Webster said Anderson was distraught about what he had done and feared spending at least the next decade of his life behind bars.
''He felt horrible about what he did,'' Webster said Tuesday. ''He spent a week in Bucks County Prison and he got a taste of how sex offenders are treated in prison. They are the lowest of the low.''
Anderson pleaded guilty in August to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault and related charges. He admitted engaging in sex acts with two girls, ages 14 and 15, who were students at Tohickon Middle School in Plumstead Township.
The sex was not forced, but both victims were legally below the age of consent.
If Anderson had committed his crime before February, when state law increased the mandatory minimum from five to 10 years in prison, he would have been facing less time behind bars, she said.
''Mandatory sentencing takes [discretion] away from the judge,'' Webster said. ''It says this is what we think in all cases, whether [it's] a 23-year-old first offender or 40-year-old repeat offender. Forcible rape would be the same sentence.''
But First Assistant District Attorney David Zellis said any effort to portray Anderson as a victim, even of mandatory sentencing laws, was unjust.
''Nobody wanted this to be the way this ended up,'' Zellis said Tuesday. ''This isn't good for the real victims in this case to have to deal with this. It's not good for the community. We were prepared to go to the sentencing and settle for whatever the judge handed down.''
Zellis said a suicide note Anderson left said nothing about fearing a long prison term, only remorse for his actions. And, he added, 10 to 20 years in prison would not have been too harsh a sentence.
Anderson acted deliberately over several weeks, Zellis said. It was not a case of a one-time mistake.
''What he did is a horrific thing for these 14- and 15-year-olds to bear and for their families to have to pick up the pieces from for many years to come,'' Zellis said.
Anderson began communicating with the girls in April using text messaging, instant messaging and the Internet site Facebook.
The girls' parents uncovered instant messages between Anderson and the two girls using computer software and notified police.
Anderson was arrested May 7, and confessed to kissing the two girls in a classroom at the middle school and engaging in sex acts with the girls at one of their homes.
The Central Bucks School District fired Anderson after his arrest. He also was dismissed by the Warrington Swim Team, where he had been a coach.
Webster said parents of some of the children he coached were prepared to speak on Anderson's behalf at the sentencing. ..more.. by Scott Kraus | Of The Morning Call

St. Pete Councilman Bryan commits suicide
9-7-2007 Florida:
FLORAL CITY - Just hours after handing in his resignation from the St. Petersburg City Council, John Bryan drove to a property he owns in Citrus County and committed suicide.
Bryan was under criminal investigation for allegedly having sexual relationships with three females in his home - two of them his teenage adopted daughters.
The 56-year-old's body was discovered by a reporter for the St. Petersburg Times who went to Floral City to talk to Bryan.
The Times reported he was slumped over in a golf cart inside his garage. A still running lawn mower was parked nearby.
St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker issued a statement through a spokesperson saying "My thoughts and prayers are with the Bryan family tonight."
Councilman Earnest Williams told The Associated Press on Friday evening that he was shocked by Bryan's passing.
"I was very surprised and amazed," Williams said. "He was always willing to help out other folks. It's just a sad day for everyone involved."
In a resignation letter released to the media earlier Friday, Bryan wrote, "I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the citizens of this great community for their confidence in me to represent them. It has been a pleasure to work with one of this city's finest Mayors, and extremely effective City Council, and a truly great city staff."
According to court sources, a female who used to be in the Bryan home - who is now an adult - came forward claiming she had a sexual relationship with him that began when she was still a minor.
She also claimed Bryan had sex with his two adopted teenage daughters.
Bryan claimed in court that the relationship with the older girl took place after she became an adult - and was consensual.
He denied having any sexual relationship with the two younger girls.
According to a bio on the St. Petersburg city website, Bryan was married with three grown children and two school-aged children.
Bryan was first elected to the District 2 Council seat in 2001, and re-elected in 2005. Before seeking office, he retired from his own business - Bryan Homes - which has built over 300 homes in the St. Petersburg area. ..more.. by FOX 13

In the final hours, John Bryan appeared in control
As the week crashed down on John Bryan, officials who knew of the abuse inquiry were on the lookout for trouble signals.
ST. PETERSBURG - In the final hours of his public life, as the walls closed in around him, John Bryan appeared in control.
For 30 minutes on Friday, John Wolfe, the city's top attorney, looked for any crack.
Bryan talked about how sorry he was, mainly for hurting his family and his friends, and for the media circus that was to come. Much of the meeting, though, was marked by silence, Wolfe said.
But in what may have been his last conversation, Bryan also focused on the future, where he would stay and how he would get by in the days and weeks ahead.
Wolfe kept looking for signs that Bryan was unstable.
He found none.
As news of Bryan's suicide on Friday sunk in on Saturday, a clearer picture of the events of the past week began to emerge. But even those final moments don't reconcile with the public face of John Bryan that most people remembered -- the family man, the civic leader and the committed St. Petersburg City Council chairman.
"There was no indication at all what was going to happen," Wolfe said Saturday, retracing his last moments with Bryan, 56. "There just wasn't anything."
- - -
A little more than two weeks ago, Bryan had lunch with George Rahdert, a friend and political supporter. Rahdert, a developer and attorney who also represents the St. Petersburg Times, said Bryan talked about his separation from his wife, Alicia, a financial planner in Tampa.
He seemed optimistic that they would get back together, Rahdert said. Bryan told him his wife blamed their marital turmoil "on the time he was spending on his political commitments."
Bryan said he had decided not to run for mayor, so he could repair his marriage.
"I was surprised that he seemed willing to set aside those political ambitions," Rahdert said. "It seemed admirable."

St. Petersburg police Chief Chuck Harmon said the department formally began investigating Bryan on Wednesday. Detectives with the crimes against children unit conducted interviews related to allegations that Bryan had sexually abused his adopted daughters. Harmon said detectives spoke to Bryan at least once. Police declined to identify other people interviewed, but they found reason to proceed.
"They told me based upon what they learned that there were some criminal allegations here," Harmon said.
The chief called Mayor Rick Baker late Wednesday afternoon to alert him to the investigation. "It was about a matter important to the city," Harmon said.
He told Baker that the investigation focused on Bryan's personal life, not his role as City Council chairman. The chief said he did not provide the mayor with many details because the investigation was still ongoing.
A day later, Thursday, Bryan made an appointment to speak with Wolfe.
He picked the time, 1 p.m. Friday. He didn't say what was on his mind.
- - -
Around 10:15 a.m. Friday, Bryan attended a shelter hearing in front of Circuit Judge Raymond Gross at the criminal court complex in Largo. Such hearings determine who has custody of children while authorities investigate abuse allegations.
Bryan and his wife were present. The children were not, said attorney Christie Pardo, who was in the courtroom.
Authorities were investigating allegations that Bryan had sexually abused two of his adopted daughters, ages 12 and 15, officials have said. The Times is withholding their names because of the nature of the allegations.
In addition, police were investigating whether Bryan had sexually abused his former nanny, whom he also had adopted. She is now 38 and lives out of state.
A Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Court spokesman said Bryan admitted to a sexual relationship with the nanny, but said it was consensual and occurred after she turned 18. Bryan also had two children from a previous marriage.
At the end of the hearing, Judge Gross ordered Bryan to have no contact with the two girls, who were allowed to remain at home with their mother.
The hearing lasted 15 minutes.
- - -
News of the hearing began spreading beyond the courthouse, and concern in City Hall mounted.
First Deputy Mayor Tish Elston and Deputy Mayor Goliath Davis considered whether Bryan could be helped by an employee assistance program.
When he heard about the allegations, Davis said he began calling Bryan because "from all my law enforcement experience, I know that you have to reach out and grab that person because when the pressure starts to mount, you don't want someone to do what John did."
Harmon also had started calling the City Council members to inform them.
Council member Bill Foster asked if police could protect Bryan. Could someone stay with him? Could he be arrested?
"I specifically said you can't let him out of your sight," Foster recalled Saturday.
"The three legs of the stool John Bryan stood on were city, family and his civic involvement," Foster said. "Yesterday all three of the legs of that stool were knocked over. You had to know the meaning of these things to him, to know we were in trouble."
Harmon said he was mindful of such concerns.
He knew Bryan was set to meet with Wolfe at 1 p.m. so he asked the city attorney to let him know if he noticed anything unusual or disturbing about Bryan's behavior, and to offer any appropriate help through the city's employee assistance program.
The letter Bryan handed to Wolfe, dated Aug. 20, originally indicated he would resign Sept. 1. Wolfe did not ask for details, but he had Bryan write in a new date and sign the letter.
Wolfe walked Bryan to the elevator after the meeting. He told Bryan to call him if he needed anything or someone to talk to.
Thanks, Bryan said, and left.
Around 2 p.m., Harmon and Wolfe spoke. Harmon asked if Wolfe saw any sign Bryan was going to harm himself or others.
"I asked him, 'Is he homicidal or suicidal?'" the chief said. "Mr. Wolfe told me: 'No.'"
If Bryan had shown such signs, police could have taken some action. But "there was no information brought to us that would allow us to take him into custody under the Baker Act or anything like that," Harmon said.
City officials announced Bryan's resignation in a tense, swift news conference at 3:45 p.m.
Davis and City Council member Rene Flowers kept calling Bryan's new cell phone, hoping he would answer.
- - -
Bryan was found dead in the garage of his Floral City home at 5:45 p.m. by a St. Petersburg Times reporter seeking an interview. Bryan killed himself by inhaling carbon monoxide.
About four hours later, Richard Giglio, a local attorney for Bryan's oldest adopted daughter, issued a statement:
"(The daughter) and her family are deeply distraught by the recent events involving her adoptive father and St. Petersburg City Council Chairman, John Bryan," Giglio said.
In an interview Saturday, Giglio, a partner with the law firm Maney & Gordon, said he is representing only the oldest daughter.
"She is in the process of dealing with everything that's going on," Giglio said.
He declined to say anything more.
- - -
Police spokesman Bill Proffitt said officials would decide this week what to do next with the investigation. "We will have to meet on Monday to decide how to close the investigation and to decide when all the documents become public record," he said.
Gail Tierney, spokeswoman for the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, said authorities were still waiting for autopsy results before releasing Bryan's suicide note.
It was found on the kitchen counter, written on a single page still attached to a yellow legal pad, Tierney said.
Bryan began writing in pencil, then switched to a pen.
"It just seemed to be kind of a goodbye kind of note from what I heard," Tierney said. "It was more wishing his family well and that he had confidence in them that they would do well."
"It was a farewell kind of note more than anything else."
Times editors Stephen Buckley and Neil Brown, staff writers Chris Tisch, Nicole Hutcheson, Cristina Silva and Barbara Behrendt and researcher Caryn Baird contributed to this report. Aaron Sharockman can be reached at asharockman@sptimes.com or (727) 892-2273.

Final Farewell After Sex Claims: 'This Is Only Way to Protect You'
9-30-2007 Florida:
ST. PETERSBURG | John Bryan's 15-year-old adopted daughter was standing in line at the Atlanta airport, waiting to fly home after a cross country trip, when she told her new older sister that she had a secret. No one else could ever know, the girl said. But she had to tell someone:
Dad "touched me."
That revelation in early July, from one adopted daughter to another, revealed a dark legacy of sexual coercion and abuse that would destroy the public image of Bryan, the City Council chairman. The allegations would stun a city, fracture a family and lead to Bryan's suicide in his Floral City house Sept. 7 as he faced a police investigation.
On Thursday afternoon, police released a report of their investigation into Bryan. If Bryan had not killed himself, the report says, police would have referred two felony charges of lewd and lascivious molestation to the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office, based on allegations that he fondled his 15-year-old adopted daughter. If convicted on both counts, he faced between 8 1/2 and 30 years in prison.
Police redacted the report to shield the identities of possible victims, but a court spokesman has identified the girls involved as two of Bryan's adopted daughters, ages 15 and 38.
Among other revelations in the report:
Bryan twice fondled his 15-year-old daughter as they lay in the same bed within a span of a few months about two years ago. He told police he had been "disoriented" and the touches had been inadvertent.
Bryan, 56, admitted to investigators that he had purchased things for his oldest adopted daughter, now 38, hoping to persuade her to have sex with him when she was 18. The woman told police that Bryan had tried to force himself upon her during a trip to Washington and promised to leave her alone only when she threatened to cry "rape." She said they eventually had a sexual relationship, telling investigators that she feared he would kick her out of the house if she didn't relent.
Bryan's wife, Alicia, learned that he may have inappropriately touched her daughter at least one year ago, but she didn't tell authorities. She was apparently influenced by Bryan's explanations and apologies, the report says. Police uncovered no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by Alicia, though the report says she made "a poor decision" in accepting her husband's stories.
A relative of Bryan recently walked in on him as he was taking his young niece's pants off.
As Bryan spoke to investigators about these allegations late on the night of Sept. 5, he knew his political career was over. He admitted making mistakes, but maintained he was a good man, the report says.
"I've just tried to be an upstanding citizen," he said, "but I've made a couple of errors in my life."
'No other place to go'
By 1986, John Bryan and his wife, Marion, had two sons, ages 5 and 9, and seemed happy.
The pair took in a teen as a nanny and adopted her after her 18th birthday.
About this time, Bryan routinely bragged to friends and co-workers about his extramarital affairs.
Marion Bryan told investigators that she eventually learned her husband was having an affair with their newly adopted daughter. The couple divorced in 1992.
That adopted daughter, now 38, told police Bryan first fondled her as she lay sleeping in bed when Marion was out. She told police she was 17 at the time. Within a month, she said, Bryan tried to molest her in the garage by forcing her against a car, but she wriggled loose.
She also told investigators that in Washington, Bryan tried to force himself on her.
They later began a sexual relationship that ended after she tried to commit suicide at 19.
The Ledger is withholding her name because of the nature of the allegations.
Bryan denied forcing himself on his oldest adopted daughter. He said he "fell in love" with her.
Apology accepted
After his divorce from Marion in 1992, Bryan met financial executive Alicia Linney. They married in 1993. Bryan's new wife decided she wanted children, and the couple made plans to adopt.
The Bryans became licensed foster parents in 2004.
They went on to adopt two girls, now 12 and 15. The report says Bryan molested the 15-year-old daughter about two years ago.
The girl told investigators he touched her genitalia while she was in a bed with him.
She said that some months later he touched her again in the same way, and that it made her "uncomfortable."
About a year later, the girl told a few people details about what Bryan did, including her mother, Alicia, according to the report.
Alicia, now 47, told investigators she confronted Bryan. He told her he had made a mistake and apologized for what he described as accidents. The report says she forgave him.
a way to protect
Just before 1 p.m. on Sept. 5, someone called the state child abuse hot line alleging that Bryan had abused his adopted daughters. Police Sgt. Katy Connor-Dubina and the department's crimes against children unit interviewed all three adopted daughters. They interviewed Bryan at the police station about 11:20 p.m.
After Bryan was read his rights, he was asked about his 15-year-old daughter's claims. He admitted that he had touched her twice, but he claimed that he was "disoriented" both times, that the contact was not intentional.
As police continued investigating, a court hearing was held Sept. 7.
A judge ordered Bryan to have no contact with his adopted daughters. That afternoon, Bryan handed in his City Council resignation letter and drove to his Floral City home.
A St. Petersburg Times reporter found his body there that evening, apparently dead from carbon monoxide poisoning.
In his suicide note, Bryan offered little to clear up his motivations.
"This is the only way to protect you," he wrote, after naming Alicia and his two youngest daughters. "Girls grow up to be special I know you will."
He signed the letter "Dad." ..more.. by ABHI RAGHUNATHAN, St. Petersburg Times

One Less Child Molester: Winston County Oregon Molester Richard Steele Commits Suicide After Sex With 15 Year Old Boy He Met On Internet
2-2-2007 Oregon:
WINSTON COUNTY, OREGON: The Winston man accused of having sexual relations with a 15-year-old Jackson County boy he met on the Internet was found dead Thursday from an apparent suicide.
A passerby found Richard Steele, 38, dead in a tent off a Bureau of Land Management road about 10 miles southwest of Winston around 8:30 a.m., according to a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office press release.
Steele had apparently ran a hose from the exhaust pipe on a sport utility vehicle to the tent. There were no signs of foul play and the case is being investigated as a suicide, according to the sheriff’s office.
Steele’s family had reported the man missing on Tuesday.
Steele had been arrested last month following a seven-month Oregon State Police investigation into four Southern Oregon men accused of sex-related crimes involving the same youth.
Steele was charged with third-degree sexual abuse, a misdemeanor, and compelling prostitution, a felony.
Police said the four men, including Steele, had met with the 15-year-old at various times. Steele and two of the other men — one from Grants Pass, the other from Bandon — had met the boy through an Internet chat site.
“None of the men knew each other,” said OSP Detective Blain Allen with the Central Point office.
He said 23-year-old Mathew Prinslow of Rogue River has since pleaded guilty to the sex-related crimes against him. Prinslow knew the victim locally and did not meet him online, Allen said.
Detectives had currently been working on the time frame during which Steele’s alleged crimes had occurred. According to the alleged victim, the two had met in the fall of 2005, Allen said.
With Steele’s death, however, the case against him is now closed.
“You can’t proceed with a case without a suspect,” he said. ..more..

Youth Minister's Death Ruled Suicide
1-12-2007 Colorado:
CRAIG, Colo. -- The death of a church youth minister accused of sexually assaulting two teenagers has been ruled a suicide.
The Moffat County Sheriff's Office and Craig Police Department had been investigating the Tuesday death of John C. Graler at his home. Graler's body was found in his home the day after he was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault, sexual assault on a child, and sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.
Investigators said that the two alleged victims were 13- and 18-year-old girls who were in a youth group that Graler led at First Christian Church in Craig. He had worked there for six years.
Graler had not been formally charged but a statement issued Thursday said, "investigators are confident that the evidence collected and information gathered during the course of the investigation would have proved to be irrefutable if the criminal case had been filed by the district attorney's office and tried in a court of law."
An autopsy revealed that Graler died from carbon monoxide poisoning, county coroner Owen Grant said.
A sheriff's investigator would not say if a note was found, but told the Craig Daily Press that aspects of the case were still under investigation.

Teacher in sex photo trial discovered dead
On trial for alleged inappropriate photos, found dead in car with engine on
1-11-2007 Pennsylvania:
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A suspended teacher on trial over charges of photographing teenage boys in revealing clothing was found dead in a car idling in his garage, authorities said.
Police went to the home of Keith Snyder, 55, after he failed to appear in court Wednesday. Judge F.P. Kimberly McFadden announced the death and sent the jury home. She did not provide any other details.
An autopsy was scheduled.
Snyder was suspended from teaching at Southern Lehigh High School shortly after he was charged in 2005 with corruption of minors, solicitation of a minor to pose nude and evidence tampering.
Several teenage boys who were Snyder’s former students testified this week that Snyder paid them extra if they performed chores at his home while bare-chested or wearing skimpy bathing suits or wrestling singlets.
“We felt this defendant committed crimes that negatively impacted young boys. Our office vigorously prosecuted the case, but on a human side, whenever a life is lost it is tragic,” said District Attorney John Morganelli.
