A man found hanging from a tree in Greenbelt Park on Sunday morning apparently first killed his girlfriend before turning to suicide, authorities said.

The body of Louise Attardi-Cramer, 50, dead from blunt force trauma, was discovered in her bedroom early Sunday, said Keyla Concepcion, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office.

Felony Sex Crime Suspect Stabs Himself In Neck Before Being Shot By Cops

7-30-2012 California:

MODESTO, CA - A 68-year-old felony sex crime suspect has died after before being shot by police earlier this month.

On July 12, David Mendez was visited by a uniformed officer and Detective Steve Anderson, who works on the Special Victims Unit. Mendez was a suspect in a sex crime and Anderson had interviewed Mendez previously. He was there today, with the other officer, to arrest Mendez.

Mendez answered the door and briefly spoke with the two men. He said he knew he would be arrested after they had completed their investigation and that he had written a confession. Mendez then walked to a nearby desk and retrieved a 12-inch “diver’s knife” that he used to repeatedly stab himself in the neck. According to Lt. Rick Armendariz, Mendez “repeatedly thrust the knife in and out, holding the knife with both his hands.”

Refusing to obey the officer’s demand to stop doing that, Mendez was Tased. This did not prove to be effective and Mendez continued to stab himself. When he rose the knife above his head and made a movement toward the officers, Anderson shot him. This did prove effective, and Mendez fell to the ground and released the knife.

He was rushed to the hospital but would die from his injuries this past Thursday from either the stab wounds, the gunshot wound or both. I looked around a bit but couldn’t find any information about what sex crime Mendez allegedly committed, but according to reports, a suicide note was found in the desk in which Mendez confessed to the crime and implied committing suicide by cop. ..Source..

Officer Involved Shooting Suspect Dies

David Mendez, the suspect in the July 12th officer-involved shooting, died from his injuries yesterday.

On Thursday, July 12th, at about 2:30 P.M., Modesto Police Detective Steve Anderson and Officer Ron Lemings went to a residence in the 1200 block of Muirswood Way to follow-up on a felony sex crime investigation. Detective Anderson, a 12-year veteran of the Department, is assigned to the Special Victims Unit, which investigates crimes involving domestic violence, crimes against children, and sexually-based crimes. Officer Ron Lemings, a 24-year veteran of the Department, is currently assigned to the Operations Division as a uniformed patrol officer.

Detective Anderson had been investigating a case, wherein David Mendez, a 68-year-old Modesto resident, was the suspect of a felony sex crime. (The specific information and details of the felony sex crime case will be withheld in order to protect the identity and confidentially of the victims.)

Detective Anderson had been in contact with Mendez and during a recent interview, Mendez admitted his involvement in this crime. Mendez was aware he was the focus of the investigation and his eventual arrest once the investigation was complete.

On July 12th, Detective Anderson and Officer Lemings went to Mendez’s residence to arrest Mendez. When officers arrived, they contacted Mendez, who was home alone. Mendez opened the front door and the officers stood by the entryway as they spoke to Mendez. Mendez told the officers he had a written confession note for them and walked to a nearby desk in the front living room area, near the front entryway.

Mendez opened the desk drawer and removed a large aquatic “diver’s knife”, approximately 12-inches in length. Mendez immediately stabbed himself with the knife in his throat area and began to repeatedly thrust the knife in and out, holding the knife with both his hands.

Officers ordered Mendez to drop the knife and Officer Lemings deployed his taser in an effort to immobilize Mendez and prevent him from causing further injury to himself. The taser was ineffective as Mendez continued to stab himself.
Mendez then removed the knife and raised it above his head in a threatening manner, as he faced the officers. Mendez was within 10 feet of the officers, who were still standing near the front entryway. Detective Anderson responded to the threat by discharging his firearm and striking Mendez.

After Mendez was shot, he fell to the ground with the knife in his hand, refusing to let it go. After repeated demands to drop the knife, Mendez complied and was taken into custody. He was immediately provided medical attention and transported to a local hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

On Thursday July 26th, detectives were notified by medical staff at the hospital that Mendez had succumbed to his injuries. This morning, the Stanislaus County Corner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Mendez. The cause of death remains under investigation pending review of all medical records.

During the follow-up investigation, crime scene investigators located a hand-written letter in the same desk where Mendez had retrieved the knife. The letter was a confession and suicide note, detailing his actions in the felony sex crime and his intentions to kill himself rather than be arrested.

Although we will never know Mendez’s true intentions or motives for his erratic and violent behavior the day of the shooting, evidence suggests Mendez may have intended to threaten the officers and force them to respond to the threat with deadly force, in what is commonly referred to as a “suicide by cop”.

Three separate and independent investigations remain on-going, which is standard in any officer-involved shooting investigation in Stanislaus County. The Modesto Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation into this incident, Stanislaus County District Attorney’s office is conducting an independent criminal review of the incident and the officers’ actions, and the Modesto Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Neither of the officers involved were injured during this incident. Detective Anderson was placed on paid administrative leave, also standard procedure after an officer is involved in a shooting incident. He has since returned to full duty as a criminal investigator within the Special Victims Unit. ..Source..

‘Bike Bandit’ saga ends in hotel suicide

5-25-2012 California:

A twisted saga involving allegations of statewide bicycle theft, drugs and child pornography seems to have ended Tuesday night in suicide.

Jason Kurt Fashimpaur, the man accused of being the “California Bike Bandit,” was found dead wearing a breathing mask connected to pressurized tanks in an Antioch hotel room.

Antioch police Lt. Scott Willerford said he didn’t know if Fashimpaur, 41, of Sausalito left behind a suicide note when he was discovered dead at the Ramada Inn. Fashimpaur had recently been accused of a string of expensive bicycle thefts stretching from the North Bay to Santa Barbara.

In one theft typical of his alleged technique, Fashimpaur is accused of visiting Sunshine Bicycle Center in Fairfax last month asking to test ride a $2,800 bike. With only a temporary ID (bearing the name “Cerri Kurtis”) with no photo, the shop let Fashimpaur take the bike for a spin, but sent a shop employee to ride along with him as a security measure.

During the ride, Fashimpaur complained about a clicking noise and brought the bike back to the shop for adjustment. He was recognized by an employee who remembered him from a crime bulletin photo distributed by SFPD.

The shop’s manager called another bike shop and confirmed the alias “Cerri Kurtis” was used there in a recent bike theft. The clerks kept Fashimpaur waiting while they fixed the clicking noise, until police arrived and detained him.

He was then identified by an employee of yet another Bay Area bike shop that was hit, City Cycle in Corte Madera, and subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary and using a forged ID, said Fairfax Police Chief Chris Morin.

While searching Fashimpaur’s home, police say they found what appeared to be methamphetamine and evidence linking him to the theft of a $6,700 racing bike from Fastrack Bicycles in Santa Barbara. The expensive Cervelo R5 had already been returned to Fastrack by another Sausalito man who purchased it on Craigslist for $2,300.

After further investigation, Fashimpaur was labeled a suspect in other bicycle shop thefts in Marin County, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Berkeley. Authorities suspect he was selling what he stole on Craigslist.

Fashimpaur was out on bail when Sausalito police uncovered evidence that he possessed child porn. Police were in the process of getting a search warrant for Fashimpaur’s computer when they learned of his apparent suicide, said Sausalito police Lt. Kurtis Skoog.

The suicide investigation was turned over Wednesday to the coroner’s division of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.

Fashimpaur is listed on Manta.com as the President of Kurt Fashimpaur Inc, a photographic enlargement company based out of Sausalito. According to his LinkedIn profile, Fashimpaur listed himself as a freelance photographer, retoucher and videographer, as well as a senior retoucher at Interpublic Group. ..Source.. by Dimitri Hagnéré

6-14-2012 New York:

A New York-based Filipino priest named in a multi-million lawsuit in 2008 filed by an alleged female lover took his own life in April during a visit to the Philippines, the Filipino Reporter has learned.

Fr. Elvis Elano, 44, reportedly found it too much to bear after his family and community “shunned” and “despised” him over an alleged seven-month sexual liaison with a woman that resulted in the filing of a $25 million suit against him and his Queens parish.

Police: Delaware Train Deaths Possible Double Suicide

Note to the person commenting: We do not gather facts, we show what is reported in the news, whatever happened in the past, is no longer relevant. Today the fact that someone committed suicide who had a prior sexual conviction, is the only thing relevant. There are many times that we wish history could be changed, but that is not possible now.

DELAWARE -- Police say a convicted child rapist and his sister were killed after lying down in front of a train Wednesday morning.

Just before 4:00 a.m., Delaware police received a call from Norfolk Southern Dispatch, saying a train had struck a pedestrian near Vernon Ave.

After arriving on the scene, officers found the bodies of two people, along with an apparent suicide note in a sealed plastic bag.

The deceased have been identified as Roy T. Weatherford III, 44, and his sister, Kara McGlenaghan, 33.

On March 2, an indictment was filed on Weatherford for six child pornography counts. He had previously served 15 years in prison for raping and drugging a female, and was released in 2007.

Dead police trainer still subject of child porn investigation

1-16-2010 Vermont:

A criminal investigation is underway at the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford. State police suspect the academy's training coordinator used a work computer to access child porn and then took his own life after becoming the target of a criminal investigation.

The investigation of a police academy trainer took a turn for the worse Saturday.

State police say 44-year old Dave McMullen of Cornwall committed suicide behind a maintenance shed at the academy, one day after police seized his home computer as part of a criminal investigation.

"All indicators reveal this was a self-inflicted would. An intentional act by Mr. McMullen. There is no indication anyone else was involved," said Major Ed Ledo of the Vermont State Police.

Police believe McMullen used a computer at the academy to view child pornography, something that came to light during an unrelated personnel investigation. While child porn wasn't actually found on the computer, emails suggested it had been accessed.

"As a result of those titles being found in Mr. McMullen's e-mails, is indicated that there was potential. We knew it was pulled in from an outside source based upon further examination of that one computer," said Ledo.

Police are examining McMullen's home computer in addition to four taken from the academy. At this time, police don't believe any others at the academy were involved in the incident.

Mother wants understanding for her dead son

1-31-2012 Maine:

AUGUSTA -- In the early morning hours of Jan. 3, 2011, Scott Penney covered his recliner in plastic and carefully leaned plywood against the backrest.

He walked around his State Street apartment, pulling closed the window shades. He felt his way across the dark room and nestled into the recliner. There, on a coffee table in front of him, Penney left a note to his family that he hoped would explain his decision, even as it begged for their forgiveness.

Penney covered his head with a tarp, grabbed a rusty shotgun, and put the barrel under his chin. He pulled the trigger.

"He didn't want to make a mess for the landlord," his mother, Linda Penney, said. "He planned it right to the letter."

Scott Penney, 45, was a trusted employee, a loyal friend, a beloved son and a proud father.

But he also was a convicted child molester.

It was this sordid past that darkened Penney's life. Everyone knew, or could easily find out, the worst thing Penney had ever done. It became who he was: Scott Penney, sexual offender.

"I will never have my life back," Penney wrote in his final letter. "I can't deal with all this around me and what has happened."

Linda Penney has her reasons for telling her son's story, but gaining sympathy isn't one of them. She doesn't offer excuses for the crimes her son committed and is not mad at the judicial system for punishing her son.

But Linda Penney hopes others will see her son as she did. She hopes others will understand the crushing social stigma he experienced as a convicted sex offender. Linda Penney also hopes that experience is understood by a probation officer assigned to supervise her son whom she believes mishandled of the case and contributed to her son's decision to end his life.

"I want people out there aware that not every child molester is a bad person," she said.

Lodi man guilty of sex charges commits suicide

12-5-2011 Ohio:

LAFAYETTE TWP. — A Lodi man found guilty of three counts of gross sexual imposition committed suicide before he could be sentenced.

Linton Auble, 70, of 574 LaVista West, was found hanging from a tree at his property at 6866 Spencer Lake Road on Sept. 21, Lt. Travis Colonius of the Medina County Sheriff’s Office said.

Auble was free on $150,000 bail at the time of his death, according to court records, and was scheduled to be sentenced last Thursday.

“There was apparently no foul play. All of the indicators are consistent with a suicide,” Colonius said.

He said Auble left a note to his wife, who found his body, and his children, at their LaVista West home.

“There was a note and a videotape he left for his wife and family. It said that he loved everyone very much, that was the general sentiment,” Colonius said.

The lieutenant said neither the note nor the tape mentioned the crimes Auble was found guilty of on Aug. 9.

Auble, charged with three counts of gross sexual imposition, changed his plea that day from not guilty to no contest. The charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

The case involved two victims that were 8 years old at the time of the crimes in the fall of 2003, according to court records. ..Source.. by Lisa Hlavinka

Suspect commits suicide

9-3-2011 Colorado:

Police found the body of Duane A. Smith, 46, of Fountain on Phantom Canyon Road.

CANON CITY — Police confirmed a child sex assault suspect was found dead Thursday after he failed to show for an interview with authorities on Wednesday.

Duane A. Smith, 46, had just been suspended from his job as a Junior ROTC instructor at Canon City High School pending a police investigation into his alleged relationship with a 16-year-old female student.

"Investigators believe that Smith took his own life after he missed a scheduled interview with investigators about his relationship with the student. Smith failed to return home after his initial contact with police and authorities feared that he may become suicidal," said Capt. Allen Cooper of the Canon City Police Department.

Dr. Dorothy Twellman, Fremont county coroner, said Smith died of carbon monoxide poisoning. He was found by a hiker about 1 p.m. Thursday inside his red Pontiac Grand Am on a turnout along Fremont County Road 67, known as the Phantom Canyon Road.

A note was also located in the vehicle, Cooper said.

Before Smith had been found, a $25,000 arrest warrant was issued accusing him of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.

Smith had worked as an ROTC instructor at the high school for the past two years, said Superintendent of Canon City Schools Robin Gooldy in a letter issued Thursday to parents of Canon City High School students.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit authored by Canon Police Detective Derek Irvine, the sister of the 16-year-old student victim reported to a school official that her sister admitted to cheating on her boyfriend.

"She could not tell who she was cheating on her boyfriend with, as he was too old, and he would get in trouble, according to a summarization of a police interview with the sister. However, under pressure when asked if the older man was Smith, the victim admitted to her sister that it was.

The victim told her sister that the two had sex twice in the supply closet in the Canon City High School ROTC room and twice in the woods when she went camping with Smith and his family, according to the affidavit. The victim reportedly told her sister the two had sex three more times between Aug. 10 and Saturday.

The affidavit indicated Smith allegedly would pick up the victim to take her to school early in the morning for drill team practice and that arrangement had been occurring "since the second semester of last year." The affidavit also indicated that Smith offered to tutor the victim and helped her improve, "really bad math grades," to a B average.

The affidavit also indicated the victim admitted to the relationship during a pre-text phone call between her and a friend on Sunday.

The victim later told police that she and Smith did not have sex more than three times but he asked her not to tell anyone about the relationship because he would get in trouble. She also told police that she loved Smith and believed he loved her, according to the affidavit. ..Source.. by TRACY HARMON

Sex assault suspect found dead at Cape camp

4-6-2011 Massachusetts:

A man accused of sexual assault at Camp Good News in Sandwich was found dead today from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

It’s the same Cape Cod camp where U.S. Sen. Scott Brown spent summers as a boy. Brown said in his memoir “Against All Odds” that he was abused at a Cape “Christian” camp and after the book came out Camp Good News confirmed he had attended the summer getaway and apologized to the senator.

The dead man was identified as Charles “Chuck” R. Devita by attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who represents a client allegedly molested by the longtime camp employee. Devita, who is shown on the camp’s Web site, has not been identified by law enforcement officials.

He apparently took his own life with a gunshot to the head and was found in his vehicle outside the camp, a law enforcement source told the Herald.

The Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe and Sandwich Police Chief Peter Wack said today in a joint statement that the man was found dead from an apparent “self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

The suspect was recently accused of abusing a child who is now a grown man, they said. That probe will continue, despite today’s death.

The 43-year-old man left a couple of notes indicating he was going to take his own life, the source tells the Herald. The notes indicated that he was “tired of being accused” of molestation and also said goodbyes to loved ones, the source said.

Local and state police descended on the camp earlier this morning. A flatbed truck left the camp early this afternoon with a pickup truck on it.

Garabedian tells the Herald his client was supposed to meet with a state police investigator about today’s death. Garabedian said his client alleges he was repeatedly sexually assaulted at the overnight camp in 1985 by Devita.

Garabedian said three other people have now come forward today alleging they were also sexually assaulted at the camp — two from Devita and one from another man.

“Another individual has come forward alleging that he was molested by a different individual. I am currently investigating,” Garabedian said.

The attorney, who represented dozens of victims of pedophile priests during the Catholic Church sex scandal, said if the dead man is confirmed to be the alleged molester, the criminal case would end but he said he would likely continue to pursue the case civilly.

Garabedian said he has not spoken with Brown about the case.

O’Keefe this week launched an investigation into the latest allegation.

The camp has been in the news since Brown revealed this winter in his book that a camp counselor on the Cape molested him in the 1970s.

O’Keefe’s office began a probe into the allegations in Brown’s book but the investigation has been dropped and Brown has declined to pursue any charges. Brown said on the Howie Carr show today on WRKO (AM-680) that today’s death does not relate to his case.

“I have no evidence at all that the person who did it to me 42 years ago is number one even alive or number two is doing it again,” he said. “I’m moving forward in my own way at my own pace with my support system.”

A spokesman for the camp said in a statement today: “Camp Good News has been notified about a body being found. We are awaiting identification from the medical examiner before commenting.” ..Source.. by Dave Wedge And Joe Dwinell

Child Molestation Suspect Kills Self

10-29-2010 Georgia:

25-Year-Old Found Dead In Camden County Jail Cell

WOODBINE, Ga. -- A 25-year-old woman accused of molesting seven boys younger than 16 years old earlier this year was found dead in her Camden County Jail cell Friday.

Detention officers at the Camden County Sheriff's Office Public Safety Complex in Woodbine, Ga., said they discovered Amy Mykkanen hanging from an air conditioning unit by her bed sheet and unresponsive in her cell about 5:30 a.m.

She was unable to be revived.

Investigators said another inmate in the cell was asleep when Mykkanen hanged herself.

"She did leave a note saying she had planned this," Camden County Sheriff Tommy Gregory said. "She didn't let anybody know, and basically leaving a note to her parents and officers and inmates saying she was sorry for hurting them."

Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Camden County Coroner's Office were called to investigate the death.

"We're trying to review to see if there's anything that we missed that could have keyed us off to prevent this," Gregory said.

According to an indictment, Mykkanen had sexual contact with seven boys younger than 16. She was facing eight counts of child molestation, one count of statutory rape and one count of enticing a child for indecent purposes.

Investigators said one 13-year-old boy's parents and grandparents called police in July and told them the boy had been molested by Mykkanen, an acquaintance of the family.

Investigators said they seized laptop computers with cameras and digital video cameras from her home.

Mykkanen's husband is in the Navy. The sheriff said he is deployed at sea and has been notified of his wife's death. ..Source.. by News4Jax.com

Former Baptist camp director charged with abuse found dead

5-25-2010 Virginia:

HERTFORD, N.C. (ABP) -- A former director of a North Carolina Baptist camp who was awaiting trial on six child-sex charges was found dead of an apparent suicide May 24.

A newspaper in Hertford, N.C., quoted the sheriff of Perquimans County as confirming that Stephen Carter, former director of Cale Retreat and Conference Center in Hertford from 2002 until his arrest last July, was found dead in a vehicle in Virginia Beach, Va., apparently from carbon-monoxide poisoning.

Carter was found in his parked truck on land he owns in Virginia. Margie Hobbs, public information officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department, said the wooded property on which Carter was found in the 4800 block of Blackwater Road is listed in his name.

Carter, 51, was out of jail on $80,000 bond on two counts each of engaging in sexual activities with a child, felony first-degree sex offense of a child and felony indecent liberties with a child. If convicted of the most serious offense he could have faced life in prison.

After his arrest Carter was placed on administrative leave by the camp, operated by Chowan Baptist Association in northeastern North Carolina. As a condition of his arrest he was banned from the property of the camp and from having any contact with anyone under 18 except for his son. The association hired an interim director in January to run this summer's camping season.

Police accused Carter of sex offenses involving three separate minors. Carter told local media he was innocent. Survivors include Carter's wife of 26 years, Grayce, and two children. Carter reportedly had attended the high school graduation ceremony for his son the day before he took his life.

Before taking over as director of the camp, Carter served as a Southern Baptist missionary in Belize from 1997 to 2001 through short-term appointment with the International Mission Board. At the time of his arrest an IMB spokesperson said the agency, which has a zero-tolerance policy regarding child sexual abuse, had no knowledge of any allegation of abuse by Carter made prior to 2009.

"A suicide is always a tragedy, and my heart goes out to Rev. Carter’s family," said Christa Brown, Baptist outreach director for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. "I also pray for the children and families who made the allegations."

Brown, who has called for the Southern Baptist Convention to develop a system for reporting and handling allegations of clergy sexual abuse, said the convention "should conduct a professional assessment of the allegations and should pro-actively reach out to provide assistance to any who may have been wounded, whether here in the United States or in Belize, where Carter previously worked for the International Mission Board." ..Source.. by Bob Allen
