Todd was apprehended on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 1:20 p.m, without incident, when a search warrant was served on a residence located in the 300 block of East Country Club Blvd. He was then booked at Big Bear jail for Sexual Molestation of a Minor, Possession of Child Pornography and Possession of an Illegal Assault Rifle.

The jail deputy discovered Todd hanging in his cell on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 4:20 a.m. The deputy promptly cut the shoelaces, from which he was hanging, then proceeded to call for medical aid. 2nd Putnam jail inmate in less than three weeks found dead in cell of apparent suicide

10-2-2014 Florida:

A second inmate has died of an apparent suicide at the Putnam County jail in less than three weeks, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

About 1 a.m. Friday, deputies found Dennis Rudy King, 66, unresponsive in his cell. They said King used a rope fashioned from a bedsheet to strangle himself. King was jailed Sept. 30 and was distraught over several child-pornography charges filed after a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

King apparently waited until lights were turned out for the night and investigators said no one in surrounding cells heard or knew anything about what happened. He did not have a cell mate.

The case is similar to the Sept. 17 death of Timothy Lawrence Walrath, 39, who also was found asphyxiated by a bed sheet in his cell. Walrath was upset about a possible prison sentence and also waited until lights were doused that night.

Death Row suicide highlights executions' delays

6-10-2012 California:

When James Lee Crummel (68) hanged himself in his San Quentin Prison cell last month, he had been living on Death Row for almost eight years - and he was still years away from facing the executioner.

California's automatic death penalty appeals take so long that the state's 723 condemned inmates are more likely to die of old age and infirmities -or kill themselves - than be put to death.

Since capital punishment was reinstated in 1978, California has executed 13 inmates, and none since 2006. But 20 have committed suicide, including Crummel, who abducted, sexually abused and killed a 13-year-old boy on his way to school in 1979. Another 57 inmates have died of natural causes. The ponderous pace of this process has helped make the state's death row the most populous in the nation, and it has generated critics from all quarters.

Victim rights groups say the delays amount to justice denied. Death penalty opponents say the process, like execution itself, amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.

OC child killer hangs himself on death row

5-27-2012 California:

One of Orange County's most notorious child killers has hanged himself on death row, the California Department of Corrections has reported.

James Lee Crummel, 68, was found hanging in his cell Sunday afternoon at San Quentin State Prison.

The former Newport Beach resident made headlines in the late '90s when neighbors found out he was a child molester. But that was only a fraction of what he had been accused of across the country.

As neighbors were putting the heat on, police were putting together a case against him in the 1979 kidnapping, sexual abuse and murder of a 13-year-old boy named James Wilfred Trotter.

The Costa Mesa boy disappeared in 1979 while on his way to school.

Eleven years later, Crummel called police as a random citizen (in what police later categorized as a twisted game of cat and mouse) to say he found some charred human bones while hiking off the Ortega Highway in Riverside County.

Sex offender hangs self at Graterford Prison

5-3-2011 Pennsylvania:

A 64-year-old inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Graterford apparently committed suicide this morning by hanging himself in his cell, a prison official said this afternoon.

The inmate was identified as Albert Brown, of Philadelphia, said prison spokeswoman Jennifer Daneker.

She said Brown had been incarcerated since June 2, 1983. He was serving a 15-to-40 year sentence for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and related crimes, Daneker said.

Medics were called to the prison on Creamery Road at 6:15 a.m., according to Daneker.

The medics tried without success to revive Brown. He was pronounced dead by prison medical staff at 7:03 a.m.

Montgomery County coroner Walter I. Hofman said Brown fashioned a noose by braiding a bedsheet and suspending it from a radiator pipe in the ceiling of his cell. Hofman ruled the death a suicide.

Brown, the coroner said, had a history of mental problems.

Brown is mentioned on Megan's List, a registration of Pennsylvania's sex criminals, as a "lifetime offender." ..Source.. by Bonnie L. Cook, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Sheriff's office reports inmate suicide at jail

2-18-2011 Iowa:

A man awaiting sentencing on a sex abuse charge hanged himself in his jail cell with a sheet, officials with the Story County Sheriff’s Office said today.

Mark Ronald Dubendorf, 63, of 72999 340th St., Collins, reportedly was found hanging from a sheet tied around his neck at around 8:17 a.m. by jail staff.

Dubendorf reportedly had used the closure hardware of his door to attach the sheet.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, Dubendorf was unresponsive when he was found. He was extricated from the sheet and jailers performed CPR on him before first responders arrived. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at 9:27 a.m.

Sheriff Paul Fitzgerald said foul play is not suspected. However, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was called in to assist with the investigation.

Fitzgerald said it’s unknown how long Dubendorf had been hanging by the sheet. He did not have a cellmate. A detention officer checked Dubendorf’s cell at 7:12 a.m. and did not see anything. While the cell door is not transparent, there is a window into the cell and the guard would have seen Dubendorf.

Dubendorf had given no previous indication he was suicidal, Fitzgerald said.

“We have procedures in place for any individual with mental health issues or who expresses suicidal thoughts,” Fitzgerald said. “This individual had none of that. This is a person for who we didn’t expect this at all.”

Dubendorf had been charged with a total of 15 counts of sexual abuse for incidents that took place between August 2004 and June 2010. He pleaded guilty in January to a single class C felony charge. According to court documents, Dubendorf had repeatedly abused a female younger than 12 years old for several years.

A sentencing hearing in the case had been set for Monday, Feb. 28.

Fitzgerald said that in his 18 years as sheriff, there have been no other suicides in the jail. ..Source.. by Luke Jennett

Death Row Inmate Found Dead at San Quentin

8-30-2010 California:

A death row inmate at San Quentin apparently committed suicide this weekend.

George Smithey, 70, was found hanging in his cell early Saturday morning, according to prison officials.

Smithey was put on California's death row in the summer of 1989 for the murder and attempted rape of Cheryl Anne Nesler. Nesler was killed April 18, 1988 in the tiny Calaveras County town of Glencoe. Her lifeless body was found by her then six year old daughter.

More than 20 years after that conviction, Smithey's appeals were still very active.

The Union Democrat reported earlier this month that a doctor recently determined that Smithey was mentally incompetent. That finding made it possible that his death sentence would be reversed.

The paper said a neuropsychologist hired by the Calaveras District Attorney’s Office examined Smithey at San Quentin in late July and determined he was "mentally retarded."

A 2002 U.S. Supreme Court decision forbids the execution of mentally incompetent individuals. Smithey's case was being watched by several death row inmates who claim they are mentally incompetent.

His death is now being investigated as a suicide, police said. ..Source.. by LORI PREUITT

George Smithey, death row inmate, hangs himself days after judge spares him from execution

8-31-2010 California:

A judge spared a convicted murderer from death row, but the inmate decided to end his life anyway.

George Smithey, a 70-year-old convict at San Quentin, hanged himself with a noose made of bed sheets in his cell over the weekend.

Prison spokesman Lt. Sam Robinson said Smithey should have been moved from San Quentin once his sentenced was reduced.

"He wasn't moved as of yet because we hadn't received those sentencing documents. So he was still on death row," Robinson told the San Jose Mercury News. ..Source.. by SEAN ALFANO

Inmate Commits Suicide Despite Warning from Judge

12-23-2009 Ohio:

CLEVELAND - An inmate kills himself inside the Cuyahoga County jail, even though a judge had ordered him placed on suicide watch.

Last Thursday, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Brendan Sheehan sentenced a 60-year old man to eight years in prison for sexually assaulting his grandchildren. To protect their identities, we are not revealing his name.

"My focus here right now, given the circumstances is my concern for his widow and trying to figure out what happened, what went wrong," said defense attorney Lester Potash.

Judge Sheehan confirmed to Fox 8 that he ordered the man placed on suicide watch while inside the county jail, where he would be held before being transferred to a state prison.

"A suicide watch isn't an everyday occurrence, so there was information presented to the judge that warranted this extra supervision to assure what took place wouldn't have happened," said Potash.

Just after midnight Sunday, deputies discovered that the man had hung himself, and died Monday night. Then, Judge Sheehan learned that the jail had not placed him on suicide watch, as instructed.

"I'm looking forward to the cooperation of the county, and the Sheriff's Department as to what took place, what they knew, what they didn't know, why they didn't do what it was that the judge directed them to do," said Potash.

The Cuyahoga County jail and the company that provides its medical services are already being sued by the family of R-and-B singer Sean Levert. He died in March of 2008 after jail workers refused to give him prescription medication.

Meanwhile, the family of the inmate who killed himself are looking for answers too.

"This is a terrible shock to her, and the concern was that once he was remanded into custody that he would be looked after," said Potash.

The Sheriff's Department would not comment about the incident today, but a spokesman says it is under investigation. ..Source.. by Fox8.com

Questions raised after man dies in jail

11-18-2009 Indiana:

Sheriff: Man stuffed food in his mouth, fell out of chair and hit head

After a 65-year-old man diagnosed with depression and paranoid schizophrenia died at the Michael L. Becher Adult Corrections Complex on Friday, questions are being asked about whether jail was the right place for him.

Preston Shaw had been charged with sexual battery, as a class D felony, for allegedly molesting a severely disabled woman at Hillcrest Centre for Health and Rehabilitation in Jeffersonville in March. Shaw initially was found competent to stand trial by Circuit Court Judge Dan Moore, and then following a mental health evaluation, he was declared incompetent for a proceeding and was transported to Evansville State Hospital. He was returned to jail late last month after mental health officials determined he had improved enough to stand trial.

Rodden said Shaw was on 24-hour surveillance, and he was allowed to watch television in the holding area. That is where he was when he reportedly fell out of his wheelchair and landed face down on top of his dinner tray.

“He shoved a peanut butter sandwich in his mouth, and then he fell over and hit his head,” Rodden said.

TN- Overton inmate found dead

6-8-2009 Tennessee:

LIVINGSTON -- The TBI is investigating the death of an Overton County jail inmate on Friday.

Thomas Morgan, 71, of Smyrna and formerly of Overton County, was being held on charges of sex offenses against a child, according to Assistant District Attorney Owen Burnett.

He had been picked up by authorities in Smyrna on Thursday and turned over to Livingston Police Chief Greg Etheredge and DA's Investigator Terry Hembree, who brought him to the Overton County jail that night.

Etheredge said that sometime in the early morning hours of Friday, Morgan was found in his jail cell suffering from an apparent suicide attempt in which he had tied a bed sheet around his neck after connecting the sheet to some type of fixture in the cell.

He was taken to Livingston Regional Hospital, where he died.

Morgan had lived in Overton County for a time and had recently moved away, Etheredge said.

Etheredge and Hembree began an investigation of him after the mother of a young girl filed a complaint alleging that Morgan had sexually molested the girl. The charges on which Morgan had been recently indicted included rape of a child and aggravated sexual battery.

"Investigator Hembree and I went to Smyrna looking for him after the grand jury here indicted him, but we could not find him at that time, which was on Wednesday," Etheredge said.

The next day, the Smyrna Police Department did find Morgan, and Etheredge and Hembree returned to Smyrna and transported Morgan back to Livingston.

Burnett confirmed that Morgan had been jailed in Overton County around 9 p.m. Thursday, his bond set at $100,000, and that he was found unconscious in his jail cell later that night.

Allegedly, Morgan had a record of sex offenses in California, Etheredge said.

MI- Convicted sex offender found dead in Oakland County Jail

4-27-2009 Michigan:

Pontiac -- Authorities are investigating the jail death of a 64-year-old convicted sex offender from Brandon Township who, along with his wife, was charged with the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl.

William Arthur Keely was found about 5:30 a.m. Monday in his Oakland County Jail cell, where he apparently cut his wrists with a sharp object and bled to death, according to a preliminary investigation.

Keely was awaiting trial on three counts of child sexual abuse activity, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison; providing pornography to a child; being a felon in possession of a firearm, which carries a five-year sentence; and a mandatory two-year sentence for possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

His wife, Margaret Keely, 53, who is an Oxford High School teacher, is charged with failure to report child abuse, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail.

Detectives with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said the alleged victim, an Oxford High student, said she was befriended by Margaret Keely at school in 2006 when she was a freshman and introduced to William Keely. She said she was invited to the Keelys' house to do odd jobs and has worked for the couple for two years. She said Keely invited her over to the couple's house June 26, and while they watched a movie together, he sexually assaulted her. She told police she fled the house and drove home. She later reported the incident to authorities.

The girl told authorities William Keely paid her money to test sexual devices and submit a survey of her experience.

According to Oakland Circuit Court files, that activity is very similar to another teenage victim's claims in 2000. A 14-year-old foster daughter living in the Keelys' home then said Keely also asked her to try out bras, panties and sexual arousal devices and then critique and rate the products.

The foster daughter contacted authorities after claiming to have had sexual intercourse with Keely twice in the home. A jury found him guilty of four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, but the conviction was dismissed on appeal and he was granted a second trial in which he pled no contest to a lesser charge, received a one-year jail sentence -- with credit for time served -- and was placed on two years probation with various conditions. He was placed on the state's sexual offender registry in 2002. ..Source.. by Mike Martindale / The Detroit News

Oxford man apparently commits suicide in Oakland Co. jail

4-27-2009 Michigan:

Oakland County Sheriff Deputies are investigating the apparent suicide of a 65-year-old Oxford man in the Oakland County Jail.

William Arthur Keely was awaiting trial on rape and weapons charges when he died in his single cell. Deputies found him dead at about 5:25 a.m. today.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Keely used a small piece of metal from a soft cast that was on his wrist because of a tendon injury.

“He apparently used it to inflict wounds upon himself that caused his death,” Bouchard said in a statement. “He did leave a suicide note in his cell.”

Deputies arrested Keely June 30 after a 16-year-old girl told police he invited her to his home, watched an adult movie with her and raped her.

The girl had done odd jobs for Keely and his wife, Margaret, who taught the girl at Oxford High School.

Margaret Keely is charged with failing to report child abuse.

Suicide didn't clear allegations

1-7-2008 Mississippi:

Capt. Pete Collins received thousands upon thousands of letters of admiration.

"A lot of people here really look up to you. Including me!" wrote one high school student from Kentucky.

A Mississippi student wrote, "I won't forget you. I had thought about suicide, but it is not worth it. Now, I wouldn't commit suicide for anything in the world."

Collins spent 28 years serving Mississippi as a highway patrolman. It was for his motivational speeches - inspiring, cautionary tales delivered over a 25-year speaking career - that Collins became, in the words of Louisa Dixon, former commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, "a great ambassador for Mississippi. Pete's talent for public speaking was of the highest caliber."

"Pete had a gift," Jackie Moore, his fiancee, said recently. "He could have you buckled over, laughing out loud one second, and crying your eyes out the next."

This 62-year-old man who was presented with enough awards to fill a home's walls slipped his socks off on a Sunday last August and hung himself with them inside the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County.

Convicted of molesting a 13-year-old girl, Collins was two days into a 10-year prison sentence when he ended his life.

"I don't worry about Pete. I know where he's at," Gail Jones, his older sister, said. "It's just the way he had to go - it's not right."

It took two trials to convict Collins. The first one, in August 2006, ended in a hung jury.

Lee County Assistant District Attorney Clay Joyner prosecuted Collins during the second trial, in August 2007. Joyner's investigation brought to the surface a portrait of Collins few wanted to see.

"In talking with current Highway Patrol investigators, I discovered a lot of them had problems with Pete," said Joyner. "Pete would take other people's stories and during his speeches put himself in their shoes. That rubbed a lot of people in the department the wrong way."

Jim Ingram, former commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, testified during the second trial. Ingram told jurors that he viewed Collins, after years of working with him, as a "dishonest" person. "I was subpoenaed, came forward and testified, under oath, to the truth," was all Ingram would say about his testimony.

More incriminating, Joyner uncovered five women who claimed to have been molested by Collins when they were teenagers, stretching back to 1967.

"None of them, whatsoever, have a motive to make something like this up," said Joyner. "When you've got a group of victims who match a sex and specific age range, from 13 to 15 years old, that, in and of itself, speaks to his situation."

A judge did not allow the women to testify at Collins' trial.

One of the victims was Kay Swindell. The Winona resident attended both of Collins' trials.

"I kept it a secret for 40 years. I never told a soul," said Swindell, who claims Collins molested her when she was 15. "That's because I didn't think anyone would believe me. Pete went out and made a big name for himself, and through all of those years, I wanted someone to know the truth about him."

Swindell said she came forward because she knew what the 13-year-old victim was going through.

"I knew that Pete would do everything in his power to try and discredit that little girl, and I knew how scared she was," said Swindell.

Joyner said he found a pattern in Collins' behavior.

"In these types of cases, you find repetition," he said. "And that's what you have here."

Collins would gain young girls' trust over a period of time before molesting them, Joyner said. "But he made a mistake with the last one. ... He never groomed her."

The incident that led to Collins' conviction began the night before Thanksgiving 2004. Visiting his son's home in Tupelo for the holidays, Collins went to bed in his grandchildren's bed.

"I'm going to sleep with them as often as I can because they are all I got," Collins testified during his first trial.

His granddaughter had a friend over, visiting.

The 13-year-old victim testified during both trials that she woke up in the middle of the night with Collins' hands down the front of her pajama bottoms.

All five of the previous victims Joyner found said they were teenagers when Collins first molested them. At least one of the girls says Collins had intercourse with her over a two-year period, beginning when she was 12.

"No man I know walks around with girls accusing him of that," Joyner said. "Again, that speaks to Collins."

Collins' family contends that his suicide was a combination of a false conviction, a 10-year sentence, public humiliation and lack of proper medication. ..more.. by William Browning

Child molester dies in California prison

Family member reports Wilde committed suicide
10-1-2007 California:

Officials confirmed Monday that convicted child molester Gary Wilde died in custody.

Wilde, 67, a two-time convicted sex offender, pleaded guilty Aug. 15 in an Auburn courtroom to four counts of egregious child molestation and sex offenses.

He admitted to willfully committing four lewd and lascivious acts with "M.D.," a girl under the age of 14 between April 1 and April 30, 1994.

The name of the victim, and her younger sister, also a victim, are not being released due to the nature of the crimes.

A family member of Wilde's reported that the molester committed suicide while in custody at the California Department of corrections processing center by taking a large number of pills.

Lt. Ray Munoz, public information for Deuel Vocational Institute, said Wilde was in the Tracy facility's reception center when he died.

"The cause of death is pending," Munoz said.

The primary mission of the vocational institute is to serve as a "reception" center for Northern California counties. It houses inmates while compiling and evaluating the criminal records and background, according to the institute's Web site.

Once the reception process is completed, the inmate is transferred to one of 33 state prisons where they serve the remainder of their prison sentences.

Wilde admitted, during sentencing, to two prior "serious and violent" felony convictions of child molestation, one occurring in Orange County in 1989 and another conviction in 1991 in Sacramento County. In 1994, Wilde, then married and a registered sex offender in Auburn, befriended the parents of two young girls, ages 9 and 10. Wilde convinced the victims' mother to divorce her husband, marry him and to turn her two young daughters, ages 9 and 10, over to him.

They planned on starting a new life in Utah. But when the victims' mother went to join Wilde and her daughters in Utah, they had vanished.

Wilde moved the girls throughout the nation, living in Washington, Utah, Tennessee, Michigan, Nevada and most recently in Idaho, after absconding with the girls from their Newcastle home, officials said.

Detective Joe Rangel of the Auburn Police Department, in conjunction with the FBI, located Wilde after his eldest victim fled and contacted authorities.

"(She) made him angry. Gary went into the house and got his 9 mm and took shots at her. She stood her ground," Rangel has said. "After he stopped shooting at her she fled."

Judge Larry D. Gaddis sentenced Wilde to 25-years-to-life in state prison. Wilde had yet to be placed in a permanent facility when he died.
