Man wanted in Cleveland found dead by authorities in Columbus

8-31-2012 Ohio:

A man wanted in Cleveland on rape and kidnapping charges was found dead this morning in a Weinland Park home by members of a fugitive-apprehension team.

Columbus police said it appears that William Wynn, 33, of Cleveland shot himself before he could be arrested by the team.

According to police, members of the U.S. marshals-led Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team went to 1302 N. Sixth St. at 7:45 a.m. to arrest Wynn. Authorities had learned that he had been staying there with a woman for several weeks.

The woman answered the door and told team members that Wynn wasn’t there. She allowed them in to search, and authorities found Wynn dead in the basement.

The team members did not hear any gunshots and neither did the woman, who had been upstairs, said Columbus homicide detective Ron Custer.

Police haven’t determined when Wynn shot himself or whether he knew marshals had found him. The investigation is ongoing. ..Source.. by Theodore Decker

Man responsible for 1994 murder commits suicide

8-28-2012 Iowa:

A man who kidnapped, raped and murdered a Johnston woman in 1994 has killed himself in prison, authorities said.

Jerry Lee Proctor, 42, hung himself Friday at maximum-security Anamosa State Penitentiary, the Iowa Department of Corrections said. An autopsy was being conducted to confirm the cause of death as asphyxiation.

The body of Patricia Howlett, 38, a mother of two, was found in November 1994. She had been raped and beaten. Her throat had been slit and her body set afire in a softball complex north of Des Moines.

Proctor was arrested over a year later before being convicted of first-degree murder and beginning his life sentence in 1997.

Investigators later tried to tie Proctor to other killings, but he denied involvement. He also denied killing Howlett.

Corrections Department spokeswoman Lettie Prell said Proctor was housed in a close security unit, which requires a higher level of supervision than the general population. Prell said she did not know what materials Proctor used to hang himself, or why guards didn’t thwart the suicide.

Prison employees responded quickly, she said, got Proctor down and got him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead 45 minutes later. ..Source.. by DesMoinesRegister.com

Man Fatally Shoots Himself After Attempted Sexual Assault and Police Standoff

8-20-2012 California:

Santa Cruz Police responded to a report of an attack at a private residence on Mountain View Avenue on Sunday morning, at approximately 11:44 a.m.

When they arrived at the residence, they learned that the victim, a 32-year-old woman who was in town to run the Wharf to Wharf, had been taking a nap on the couch when she awoke to the man ransacking the house.

The woman, who was home alone, confronted the intruder, and at this point he attempted to strangle and sexually assault her, according to Santa Cruz Police.

The woman had no weapons and fought viciously for her life, according to Steve Clark, Deputy Chief of the SCPD. She was successful in fighting off the suspect twice during the attack, which Clark said was very violent.

Eventually, the victim broke free, running to a neighbor's home to call the police.

Officers matched the description of the attacker to a man who lived in the neighborhood: Richard Andrew Glanzman, Sr., 55.

Officers searched the suspect's home, and found live ammunition was spilled on the floor of a bedroom, and the suspect barricading himself in the room.

After securing the perimeter, officers began attempted to contact Mr. Glanzman, verbally and even telephoning the house. Glanzman failed to respond. Meanwhile, approximately 20 nearby homes were evacuated.

The SCPD's Emergency Services Unit (ESU) was called to organize a hostage negotiation team, and simultaneously obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect.

The arrest warrant charged him with Attempted Sexual Assault, Attemped Homicide, Burglary, and False Imprisonment with a bail amount of $1,000,000.

After the arrest warrant was obtained, the ESU made entered the home around 6:30 p.m., finding Glanzman deceased in an upstairs bedroom. He sustained a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The suspect shot himself with a semi-automatic weapon, according to Deputy Chief Steve Clark.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the scene of the attack as well as the scene of the suicide. At this time it is not yet known if the suspect stole anything from the house where he attacked the victim. It is also unknown what time the suspect may have shot himself.

"Nobody heard a gun shot. But depending how it was done, it's entirely possible that it could have been muffled," said Deputy Chief Clark.

The victim was treated for her injuries at Dominican Hospital and is in recovery.

"I can't say enough about her bravery," said Deputy Chief Clark. "She fought for her life, and won. It was a very violent attack."

SCPD is also looking into the entire history of the suspect.

"We only had contact with him once, and it was for a non-criminal issue," said Deputy Chief Clark. ..Source.. by Maria Grusauskas
