8-19-2008 Missouri:KSDK -- A St. Charles man, accused of raping young girls during the late 1990s, killed himself in prison this weekend.
The St. Charles County prosecutor says Charles Steffani tied a bed sheet around his neck, then positioned himself on the bed in a way that cut off circulation.
The suicide took place Saturday at Jefferson County Correctional Center. Steffani, who was charged with 17 new felonies last year, was already serving a 20-year sentence for similar crimes in 2005.

Man convicted of sex assaults found dead
ST. CHARLES, MO. (AP) -- A man convicted of St. Louis-area sex offenses is dead after reportedly hanging himself in prison.
The Missouri Department of Corrections says 55-year-old Charles Steffani was pronounced dead about 5:45 a.m. Saturday at the Jefferson City Correctional Center.
Corrections officials say an autopsy is planned. STLToday.com, the Web site for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, quotes St. Charles County's prosecutor as saying Steffani used a bed sheet to kill himself.
Steffani had been in prison since 2005 and was serving a 20-year sentence for sexual assaults in St. Louis and St. Charles counties, but still faced charges for alleged attacks on young girls in the 1990s.
