Man Flees Gainesville Sex Trial, Found Dead At Georgia Welcome Center

7-27-2005 Georgia:

ST. MARYS, Ga. -- Police conducting a security check at the Georgia Welcome Station Saturday night found the body of a 50-year-old man who disappeared last week while on trial on child molestation charges in Gainesville, Fla.

A St. Marys officer spotted Gary Nicholson's Mercury Grand Marquis, parked at the south end of the parking lot about 7:15 p.m.

"He saw this particular car sitting way out of the way, all by itself," Lt. Frank Thornal said. "He didn't see anybody in the car or anybody on any of the picnic tables."

The officer looked closer and saw Nicholson's body was lying across the front seat with his belt wrapped around his neck.

The Camden County medical examiner ruled the cause of death as suffocation, suicide. Alachua County deputies were told a suicide note was found in the car.

Police said Nicholson, of Melrose, Fla., got in his car and left the courthouse while awaiting the verdict on a 2002 charge of sexual battery of a minor. He called his attorney to say he wasn't coming back.

After Nicholson's disappearance, the jury found Nicholson guilty of two counts of sexual battery of a minor and one count of sexual battery on a child under 12. ..more.. by News4
