Grand jury deems prison death suicide, finds no wrongdoing

11-28-16 Nebraska:

A Lancaster County grand jury has determined a 33-year-old inmate at the Lincoln Correctional Center committed suicide in January and found no wrongdoing in his death, according to reports filed last week.

Charles Gipson was found unresponsive in a prison shower around 1:30 p.m. Jan. 13 after an inmate notified a caseworker, the grand jury's report said.

Prison staff found him him lying on his side, fully clothed with a bedsheet bound with a prison-issued belt around his neck, the report said.

Attempts to revive Gipson were unsuccessful.

A coroner determined he died of asphyxiation, and investigators found no evidence of a struggle at the scene or on his body, the report said.

Analysis of handwritten suicide notes found during the investigation determined it was more likely than not Gipson wrote them, the report said.

His death was investigated by the grand jury because state law requires the proceeding for all deaths occurring in state prisons.

Gipson was serving six to 12 years for an attempted first-degree sexual assault of a child conviction out of Douglas County. He would have been eligible for parole March 6, and his tentative release date was June 6, 2019, according to prison records. ..Source.. by RILEY JOHNSON Lincoln Journal Star

Convicted sex offender found dead in prison shower, officials say

A 33-year-old inmate was found dead in a shower at the Lincoln Correctional Center Wednesday afternoon, according to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.

Prison staff found Charles A. Gipson on the floor of the housing unit shower with a belt around his neck about 1:30 p.m., a department release said.

Staff members took the belt off his neck, called 911 and began CPR, the release said.

Medics took over care when they arrived and ultimately determined "there were no signs of life," the release said.

The Nebraska State Patrol investigated but has not determined an official cause of death.

Gipson was serving six to 12 years for an attempted first-degree sexual assault of a child conviction out of Douglas County. He would have been eligible for parole March 6, and his tentative release date was June 6, 2019, according to Corrections Department records.

Because Gipson died in custody, a grand jury will investigate his death as required by law. by Riley Johnson
