RARITAN, NJ - Attorney Richard O. Schubach was found dead in his car Tuesday morning from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, a few days after he was charged with three counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct resulting from an undercover operation by the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office.
Borough police discovered Schubach in his car in a parking lot adjacent to his office at 1124 Route 202 at 7:35 a.m. Tuesday, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano. Police received a "welfare request" phone call from someone looking for Schubach; he was thought to have been in his office, according to Soriano.
Police say Schubach was unresponsive with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest.
The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes detectives responded to the scene to assist Raritan Borough police. Schubach was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:05 a.m. by EMT’s from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset.
Shubach was transported to the New Jersey Northern Medical Examiner’s Office where a post mortem examination will be conducted.
On Friday, Jan.29, Schubach had been charged with three counts of Criminal Sexual Contact, 4th Degree following an undercover investigation by the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office. The Stockton resident had been released on $2,500 bail.
The investigation had begun Thursday, Jan. 28 when an undercover female detective visited Schubach's office.
Soriano said that investigators acted on a tip received in December, 2015 that Schubach had offered some of his female clients reduced legal fees in exchange for sexual favors.
The undercover detective met with Schubach under the pretense that she was facing criminal charges, according to Soriano.
During this initial meeting, Schubach requested that she return to his office the next day with further documentation about her criminal matter. Prior to leaving the meeting, Schubach asked the undercover detective to wear something “pretty” for their next meeting, Soriano said.
The undercover detective returned the next day to meet with Schubach at his law office. As the detective was seated in a chair, Schubach approached her and without permission or prompting, placed his hand into/under the undercover detective’s blouse and began fondling her, according to Soriano.
After briefly stepping away he, again, approached her and placed his hand into/under her blouse and fondled her a second time, according to the prosecutor. During this meeting Schubach also placed his hand on the inner thigh of the detective, Soriano said.
Thereafter, the undercover detective stood up and told Schubach “I don’t like this” and attempted to leave his office. Schubach asked her to “hold on” before she opened the door to exit his law office, Soriano said.
Schubach approached her by the exit door, and he exposed her right breast and placed his mouth onto her breast, according to Soriano. Before she exited the building he instructed her to turn around to face him while he proceeded to lift up her skirt, Soriano added.
