Medical Examiner: Delaware fugitive hanged himself

1-7-2015 Virginia:

UPDATE 1/8/14: On Thursday the medical examiner determined the cause and manner of death to be suicide by hanging.

NEWPORT NEWS—The fugitive at the center of a daylong standoff with a police tactical team at a motel has died, a police spokesman confirmed.

Shortly before 5 p.m., members of a SWAT team carried Jawan Colson out of a room at the Midtown Motel along Jefferson Avenue and helped paramedics put him into an ambulance.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.

The standoff began around noon Wednesday when the U.S. Marshals Service discovered a fugitive from Delaware barricaded inside a room at the motel.

The Marshal's office in Delaware says Colson was wanted for Failure to Register as a sex offender and 1st Degree Rape.

The 30-year-old as also wanted on three counts of rape, one count of strangulation, and unlawful imprisonment among other charges, according to the Newport News Police Department.

Authorities cleared the motel and negotiators tried to convince Colson to surrender, as snipers zeroed-in on the room.

The bomb squad and other law enforcement made a staging area further down Jefferson Ave, in the Brentwood Shopping Center.

After several hours, around 4 p.m, the SWAT team fired several percussion rounds in the direction of the room. The tactical team was seen smashing out a window.

Authorities said they found Colson already unconscious, according to police spokesman Lou Thurston.

The SWAT team did not injure the man during the arrest, said Thurston.

Police would not confirm if Colson killed himself.

The cause and manner of his death will be determined by the medical examiner. ..Source.. by Eric Kane

Man wanted in Georgetown rape hanged himself in Virginia

A convicted sex offender accused of raping a Georgetown woman last month committed suicide Wednesday during a police standoff in Newport News, Va.

Jawan T. Colson, 30, had been on the run for 19 days when police caught up with him at a motel in Virginia.

Newport News police and U.S. Marshals attempted to take Colson into custody, but he managed to barricade himself in the motel room, according to the Newport News Police Department.

Negotiators called to the scene were unable to convince Colson to surrender and police eventually deployed tear gas into the room before forcing their way inside.

Police said they found Colson unconscious and he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On Thursday, the medical examiner’s office in Norfolk ruled the cause and manner of Colson’s death to have been suicide by hanging.

Colson, whose last known address was in Lincoln, was wanted by Georgetown police for allegedly raping a 29-year-old Georgetown woman at the Count Seat Apartment complex and then tying her up.

Colson reportedly told the woman that he planned to get a gun and would not be going to jail, Georgetown Police Department spokesman Lt. Lawrence Grose said.

After the attack, Colson stole the woman’s 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe, which was later found near Bubba’s Rock Shack off North Dupont Highway in Dover.

The woman eventually was able to free her hands and call police.

According to the Delaware Sex Offender Central Registry, Colson was a Tier 3 or high risk sex offender who was convicted of third-degree rape in 2005. ..Source.. by Scott Goss
