Man Accused of Raping and Filming Son Found Hanged in His Jail Cell

11-30-2014 Alabama:

A man who was accused of imprisoning, raping and filming sex acts with his young son was reportedly found dead on Monday night.

Carl Philip Herold was facing some 18 child sex counts in Alabama. He was found hanged in his cell as he was headed to face federal charges in New York.

Herold's attorney, Adam Bollaert, said that Herold likely committed suicide as he prepared to face the charges on Nov. 21 in a Syracuse federal court.

Bollaert said that when he last saw Herold last week, “he had great spirits, he seemed up and was ready to continue fighting this case. So, we don’t understand what happened.”

Herold was arrested in Alabama in November 2013. The 33-year-old man had a computer programming background and ran a popular YouTube channel where he livestreamed programming lessons.

The alleged abuse began in August 2011, when the child would have been seven years old.

NY Daily News reports that after his arrest, Huntsville prosecutors said the man’s 9-year-old son was not enrolled in school, and is believed to have been kept in the man’s home without interaction with the outside world for approximately eight months.

In Alabama, he faced 18 charges including conspiracy to commit sodomy, sexual abuse of a child under 12, sodomy, complicity, aggravated child abuse and conspiracy to commit sexual abuse.

A month later, police also arrested Herold’s domestic partner, Charles Dunnavant, who was accused of participating in what prosecutors called a child porn ring.

In December 2013, he was also indicted in New York, where he had once lived. Herold was charged with 10 counts of child pornography production for allegedly forcing his child to “engage in sexually explicit conduct” and filming it.

“My reaction to it, ultimately, is I wish that Carl Herold had been brave enough to face justice in Madison County rather than doing what he did,” said Huntsville prosecutor Jason Scully-Clemmons. “Today above all else, I’m sad for the victim in this case, as I have been all along.”

Dunnavant remains behind bars on $1 million bond. He is charged with sexual torture, sodomy, aggravated child abuse and exposing a person to an STD.

AL reports that a third defendant, Mark Bedwell, was also indicted on multiple related counts; Bedwell, however, does not live in the U.S. and has not been arrested here. ..Source.. by OpposingViews
