2-1-2012 Ohio:
JEFFERSON — An inmate at the Ashtabula County Jail, charged with gross sexual imposition, died Sunday at Hamot Medical Center in Erie after hanging himself Friday morning, Sheriff William Johnson said Monday.
Dwayne A. Crites, 38, 4841 Route 322, Williamsfield Township, died of injuries consistent with asphyxiation Sunday after he was found hanging in his cell Friday morning, said Johnson, who was citing the autopsy report.
“At 6:30 a.m. during routine bed checks, Crites was found hanging in his cell. Our corrections staff immediately took him down and began CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and they had him breathing on his own before the rescue squad arrived,” Johnson said. “He had used his bed sheets to hang himself.”
The Jefferson Fire Department responded to the scene and transported Crites to the Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was then transported by helicopter to Hamot Medical Center.
“He was in intensive care and then expired on Sunday,” said Lt. Terry Moisio, jail administrator.
Moisio said Crites gave no indication to any of the staff that he was contemplating suicide, but no one can predict human behavior.
“We can follow every protocol and every procedure, but we cannot control everything,” he said.
“This is why we do constant shakedowns and bed checks,” Johnson said. “This was unfortunate, but I am very proud of how our staff handled the situation.”
Crites was arraigned on Jan. 23, and on Friday he was bound over to Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court on a charge of gross sexual imposition, a third-degree felony, according to court dockets.
“He was facing a long time in jail pending conviction,” Johnson said. ..Source.. by ELLEN KOLMAN
