MI- Convicted sex offender found dead in Oakland County Jail

4-27-2009 Michigan:

Pontiac -- Authorities are investigating the jail death of a 64-year-old convicted sex offender from Brandon Township who, along with his wife, was charged with the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl.

William Arthur Keely was found about 5:30 a.m. Monday in his Oakland County Jail cell, where he apparently cut his wrists with a sharp object and bled to death, according to a preliminary investigation.

Keely was awaiting trial on three counts of child sexual abuse activity, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison; providing pornography to a child; being a felon in possession of a firearm, which carries a five-year sentence; and a mandatory two-year sentence for possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

His wife, Margaret Keely, 53, who is an Oxford High School teacher, is charged with failure to report child abuse, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail.

Detectives with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said the alleged victim, an Oxford High student, said she was befriended by Margaret Keely at school in 2006 when she was a freshman and introduced to William Keely. She said she was invited to the Keelys' house to do odd jobs and has worked for the couple for two years. She said Keely invited her over to the couple's house June 26, and while they watched a movie together, he sexually assaulted her. She told police she fled the house and drove home. She later reported the incident to authorities.

The girl told authorities William Keely paid her money to test sexual devices and submit a survey of her experience.

According to Oakland Circuit Court files, that activity is very similar to another teenage victim's claims in 2000. A 14-year-old foster daughter living in the Keelys' home then said Keely also asked her to try out bras, panties and sexual arousal devices and then critique and rate the products.

The foster daughter contacted authorities after claiming to have had sexual intercourse with Keely twice in the home. A jury found him guilty of four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, but the conviction was dismissed on appeal and he was granted a second trial in which he pled no contest to a lesser charge, received a one-year jail sentence -- with credit for time served -- and was placed on two years probation with various conditions. He was placed on the state's sexual offender registry in 2002. ..Source.. by Mike Martindale / The Detroit News

Oxford man apparently commits suicide in Oakland Co. jail

4-27-2009 Michigan:

Oakland County Sheriff Deputies are investigating the apparent suicide of a 65-year-old Oxford man in the Oakland County Jail.

William Arthur Keely was awaiting trial on rape and weapons charges when he died in his single cell. Deputies found him dead at about 5:25 a.m. today.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard said Keely used a small piece of metal from a soft cast that was on his wrist because of a tendon injury.

“He apparently used it to inflict wounds upon himself that caused his death,” Bouchard said in a statement. “He did leave a suicide note in his cell.”

Deputies arrested Keely June 30 after a 16-year-old girl told police he invited her to his home, watched an adult movie with her and raped her.

The girl had done odd jobs for Keely and his wife, Margaret, who taught the girl at Oxford High School.

Margaret Keely is charged with failing to report child abuse.

Interesting... I live in the same township as these folks. I'm looking at a local article that says he was in a stepped-up observation unit for inmates with mental health issues, which were single cells with glass windows. It also says that he attempted to harm himself a few months ago. It also says that he was screened for risk assessment, and WAS assessed as a risk. Hmmm......
It also says that the OCSD is not worried about a lawsuit, because it would be difficult to PROVE anything. (True enough)
I wonder --- how long does it take to bleed to death?... especially from a crude job that a small, blunt piece of metal would do?... anybody know??
Because Lord knows they wouldn't give a sharp piece of metal to one who's in ANY cell, let alone an observation cell...would they?? I wonder how he injured his tendon, to begin with?... <..never mind..>
The guy was an inventor. He and another guy from out west co-invented a newer version of a type of stun-gun that was safer. They both held the patent, which was pending as of a year ago.
A sad, sad business - to be sure ... all the way around.

Well. Sounds sad, but so was the assault he commited on that young girl. Living in the same township, that girl is a well respected and highly honored young lady. Do you not think for one second that she was upset over what happened? Keely knew what he did, guilt gets to you after a while. Its unfortunate the way he died. I know for a fact that she thinks about it everyday. If you knew the entire story, your opinion may be different. Would you like it if it happened to someone you loved? Your child? Your relative? Think about it.
