1-14-2009 Alaska:
An inmate at the Wildwood Correctional Center in Kenai is believed to have killed himself early this morning, a spokesman for the Department of Corrections said.
Authorities identified him as Edgar Carle, 52.
The inmate had been in Wildwood about a year awaiting a trial on a charge of sexual abuse of a minor, said Richard Schmitz, department spokesman. A court hearing in the case was scheduled for this afternoon.
Carle didn't leave a suicide note and there was no immediate sign he was in emotional distress, Schmitz said. Other inmates were in their cells sleeping. Authorities don't believe there was any foul play or that anyone else was involved.
Carle had an inmate job at the prison as a night janitor and was on duty this morning. He was last seen alive around 1:30 a.m. doing his job, Schmitz said. Twenty minutes later, a correctional officer found he had hung himself, using a cord from his cleaning machine, likely a floor buffer, Schmitz said.
Medics and troopers were called. Medics tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at 3:06 a.m.
Troopers will conduct an official investigation and the department also does its own internal investigation.
