5-22-2006 Louisiana:
A convicted sex offender - who sheriff's deputies said threatened to kill himself when they dragged him from his Arabi trailer two months ago to face a new charge - was found hanged Sunday in his jail cell, an apparent victim of suicide, the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office said.
On March 14 a SWAT team arrested David Kirsch, 44, at his federally subsidized travel trailer at 1906 Alexander St. and booked him on a charge of oral sexual battery involving a 5-year-old girl.
After a two-hour standoff, the SWAT team stormed the trailer when Kirsch slashed his wrists and arms, inflicting superficial wounds on himself, officials said. The Sheriff's Office quoted Kirsch as saying he was going to kill himself.
When arrested, Kirsch had been out of jail for only four months after being released in November from a St. Tammany Parish jail where he had served four years for indecent behavior with a juvenile.
On Sunday, Kirsch was alive when a deputy checked on him about 6 p.m., Baumy said. He said Kirsch was in a cell by himself so he would not be harassed by other inmates.
But when a deputy returned to the cell at 7:12 p.m. during a count of inmates, Kirsch was hanging from a sheet, Baumy said. He said Kirsch had not threatened to kill himself after his incarceration.
The death was under investigation by the detective bureau but is an apparent suicide, Baumy said. ..more.. by
