9-25-2007 Florida:
A New Bedford man who hanged himself in a Florida jail Saturday after being arrested last week on sexual assault charges died Monday night.
Shawn J. Gomes, 45, formerly of 391 Summer St., was pronounced dead at the Bay Medical Center in Panama City, Fla. He died from injuries sustained from hanging himself with a bedsheet he had placed over a showerhead.
Mexico Beach County investigators arrested Mr. Gomes, who had a long criminal record in New Bedford, last Wednesday after a woman there alleged he sexually assaulted her.
The victim told police that after meeting with Mr. Gomes, she had two drinks at his home, and remembered nothing until she woke up the next day. She told police she was without her underwear, and there were marks on her body that indicated sexual activity.
