2-5-16 Virginia:
Manassas, Virginia Detective David Edward Abbott Jr. devoted his career to protecting children (or so it appeared), serving for more than a decade on a task force aimed at rescuing children being lured in by sexual predators on the internet. Think Chris Hansen on the hit reality television series “To Catch a Predator.”
Even Abbott’s personal life revolved around children. The 39-year-old detective spent years coaching teenage boys in a youth hockey league – which would later become the source of all his problems. Last month, it was reported that police learned Abbott had sent sexually inappropriate text messages to a 13-year-old boy in the hockey league, requesting sex acts via phone and social media. The inappropriate behavior went on for more than two years; the boy was 11 years old when it began.
On December 15, police attempted to execute a search warrant at Abbott’s townhouse where he lived with his mother around 2:30 a.m., which resulted in a four-hour standoff. Police had “obtained four felony arrest warrants – two counts of indecent liberties by a custodian and two counts of use of a communication device to solicit a sexual offense,” reports The Washington Post.

Update: Man found dead in Chesapeake home after standoff
1-17-2014 Virginia:
Chesapeake, Va. - SWAT teams used an armored vehicle to get closer to a Shelview Circle home on Friday.
They tried for several hours to make contact with a man inside, but when they repeatedly got no response, they finally went inside just before 3 p.m. to find him dead.
“It’s definitely scary. Nobody wants to see this in their neighborhood. Nobody wants to see this anywhere,” commented a neighbor.
Police say they went to the home to execute a search warrant for child pornography around 9:30 this morning.
They say they heard what sounded like a gunshot as they approached the front door.
That’s when they decided to call in the swat team.
“What I know now is that this is stemming from an investigation that was initiated in November. Again, we don’t have any arrest warrants on file at this point. It’s just an investigation. We were going in for property,” says Kelly O’Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department.
Officers say they don’t know if the man found dead is the suspect in the child pornography case.
Forensics crews and detectives will now go inside the home to start their investigation. ..Source.. by NewsChannel3

Child sex abuse suspect hangs himself
8-12-2013 Virginia:
An Arlington man scheduled to stand trial in October on charges of continuous sexual abuse of a child hanged himself Monday at the Johnson County Law Enforcement Center and was pronounced dead shortly after.
Johnson County Sheriff Bob Alford said Jay Morgan, 50, was discovered in his cell about 5:10 a.m.
Morgan, who was being held in solitary confinement, used his shirt to hang himself, Alford said.
Alford said Morgan had not attempted suicide before and was not on suicide watch. A guard discovered Morgan during the usual once every 30 minute rounds, he said.
Cleburne firefighters responded at 5:23 a.m. to find Morgan deceased with a homemade noose around his neck. Jail staff attempted to revive Morgan for several minutes without success, according to reports.

Child pornography suspect dies in federal raid in Manassas
8-2-2013 Virginia:
A man at the center of a federal child pornography investigation was killed Thursday morning as agents attempted to serve an arrest warrant at his home outside Manassas.
Douglas Clayton Lewis, 56, appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after an exchange of gunfire with agents in the 9500 block of Covington Place off Sudley Manor Drive, according to police.
No one else was injured.
A search warrant affidavit unsealed Thursday details a 13-month investigation into Lewis’ computer activities.
The investigation began in July 2012, and his townhouse was raided on Oct. 18, with agents seizing more than 800 computer files. Of those, agents found 50 images of child pornography and 157 pornographic videos, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court. It doesn’t appear Lewis was arrested at the time, but he did admit to agents that “he used search terms like “10-year-old” and “11-year-old” when he searched for child pornography files,” the complaint stated.
Among the computer files, agents found child pornography videos of pre-teens and children as young as 4 to 6 years old, some from Russia, the search warrant affidavit stated.
On Thursday morning, after receiving information that the exchange of child pornography continued on a work computer issued to Lewis, agents again raided his home about 6 a.m.
“As federal agents approached the home, they encountered the suspect exiting the residence,” Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok said in a news release. “The suspect ignored commands by the agents and fled down an alleyway in between two townhomes.”
Agents confronted Lewis in an alley, where he “brandished a handgun and pointed it towards the agents,” Perok said.
One of the agents fired on Lewis, striking him in the lower body. Lewis ran behind a fence, where he was found dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Perok said.
Residents in the townhouse community said the neighborhood is normally a quiet one and the early-morning gunfire rattled everyone. But they said they weren’t surprised by Thursday’s raid since the house had been targeted before and computers seized.
Some neighbors said they thought authorities raided the wrong house in October.
Heidi Lang, who lives a few houses down from Lewis described him as a "nice guy" and said he was a "gun enthusiast" who collected firearms.
"He was a quiet guy who kept to himself," said neighbor Jeff Settle
Lewis' neighbors said they never saw children, or other guests visit his house, and until October they had no reason to suspect anything was amiss at his house.
Rosie Ellyson, who lives across the street from Lewis' house, said the incident left her feeling "flabbergasted."
"I wouldn't say shocked, but I am definitely disappointed," she said. "I guess you can never be sure who your neighbors are." ..Source.. by InsideNova

UPDATE: Medical examiner rules Tichenor death a suicide
11-14-2012 Virginia:
Former College of the Canyons trustee was due for sentencing on sex-related charge
A former College of the Canyons trustee who entered a plea of guilty on a charge that he solicited a minor for sex over the Internet has killed himself, an official said Tuesday.
Ernest “Ernie” Tichenor committed suicide, said a spokeswoman for the Loudoun County Medical Examiner’s office in Virginia. She said he died as a result of asphyxia.
No autopsy was done on the body, she said.
At 6:20 a.m. Friday, officers with the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia received a call of a “suspicious death” from someone who shared a house with Tichenor, said Officer Eddy Azcarate, spokesman for the department.
Responding officers arrived at the home on Cedarlake Court, a cul-de-sac flanked on either side of the street by rows of joined townhomes.
Tichenor’s body was found inside the home in the 4300 block of Cedarlake, Azcarate said.
“All the indications were that Mr. Tichenor did take his own life,” he said.
Tichenor was scheduled to appear in Loudoun County Court for sentencing after he pleaded guilty last summer of having solicited a minor for sex over the Internet.
The charge involved a 13-year-old girl.
Under Virginia law, anyone found guilty of the offense faces a prison term of no less than five years and could be sentenced to as many as 30 years.
Tichenor, who was born in Orange County in 1956, served on the Santa Clarita Community College District board from 1997 to 2009.
He grew up in the San Fernando Valley, living in suburbs including Tarzana and in Pasadena, before moving to Valencia with his wife, Holly.
Tichenor declined to run for a fourth term on the COC board in 2009, saying he had been hired by the federal government in Washington, D.C. He moved to Virginia later in 2009. ..Source.. by Jim Holt Signal Senior Staff Writer

Death penalty? Inmate suicide precedes child porn indictment
8-9-2011 Virginia:An inmate, a soldier who allegedly trafficked in violent child pornography, has been found dead in the solitary ward at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail. Officials say that Willis E. Coley of Alexandria apparently committed suicide August 2, nearly nine months after his arrest and two weeks away from a federal indictment.
A 27-year-old U.S. Army Specialist, Coley was a military photographer and reporter whose work is featured on numerous websites. But it was his use of another online application that brought the charge that preceded his death. ....
During a search of his apartment, Coley allegedly admitted to possessing the gruesome images and directed FBI agents and police officers to an external computer hard drive that contained additional horrors, including one video of a prepubescent girl getting anally raped.
"The child appears to be crying," states the complaint.
According to the Jail's Lt. Col. Roland Beauford, inmates on the four-cell "segregation" unit which housed Coley– along with accused UVA lacrosse killer George Huguely– spend almost all their time, including mealtime, in the cells, which contain a bed, sink, and toilet. Beauford says the inmates are checked every 30 minutes, and a guard observed that Coley was "fine" during one check, but on the next trip discovered him hanging from a torn bedsheet. Beauford says that revival efforts, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator, were to no avail.
"Our goal is to keep everyone safe," says Beauford, who notes that Coley was not on suicide watch and had previously been "nondisruptive."
Charged with a single count of transporting child pornography, Coley could have faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted. An investigation into his death, conducted by Albemarle County police, is ongoing. ..Source.. by Courteney Stuart

Wanted Man Staying at Friend's House Dies During Stand-off
12-12-2011 Virginia:Martinsville, VA -- The search for a sex offender led to a standoff in Martinsville Tuesday morning and ended with the suspect's death.
Investigators responded to a house on Drewry Road in Martinsville to look for Steven Ray Bishop, 40, Tuesday morning. When they arrived, they say Bishop shot himself.
Bishop was wanted by the Virginia State Police and Patrick County Sheriff's Office for failure to register as a sex offender and failure to appear on drug distribution charges.
US Marshals, along with the Henry County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police Tactical Team, searched Bishop's mobile home in Bassett. According to US Marshals, Bishop was not at the home, but they discovered an active meth lab.
They learned Bishop was at his friend's house on Drewry Road. A friend of Bishop's said that Bishop came to the house Monday to fix her daughter's car. He then spent the night, and Tuesday morning heard a knock on the door from the Police. His friend says he ran into the bedroom and shot himself, saying he would rather be dead than in jail.
Neighbors say it was all pretty chaotic.
"I woke up about 7:30 this morning hearing gunshots, but I thought I was dreaming, but it really was true. Then the police was in front of my yard and everybody was drawing guns," said Chris Barbour, a neighbor of Bishop's friend.

Roanoke jail inmate charged in sex attack dies in bedsheet hanging
7-14-2011 Virginia:A Roanoke City Jail inmate awaiting trial on charges of sexual assault and robbery apparently hanged himself with a bedsheet Wednesday, the city sheriff's office said.
James Early St. Clair, 52, was declared dead in his jail cell after deputies found him hanging from the sheet and unresponsive at 4:55 p.m., Patricia Johnson, spokeswoman for the sheriff, said in a statement. Attempts by jail staff to revive St. Clair failed, Johnson said.
The death was an "apparent suicide," Johnson said.
St. Clair had been jailed without bail since June 17, when he was accused of groping and yelling at an 18-year-old woman walking with two male friends in front of the Roanoke City Market building on a Friday night. The woman's friends grabbed St. Clair and held him for police after the attack, police said.

Former Baptist camp director charged with abuse found dead
5-25-2010 Virginia:
HERTFORD, N.C. (ABP) -- A former director of a North Carolina Baptist camp who was awaiting trial on six child-sex charges was found dead of an apparent suicide May 24.
A newspaper in Hertford, N.C., quoted the sheriff of Perquimans County as confirming that Stephen Carter, former director of Cale Retreat and Conference Center in Hertford from 2002 until his arrest last July, was found dead in a vehicle in Virginia Beach, Va., apparently from carbon-monoxide poisoning.
Carter was found in his parked truck on land he owns in Virginia. Margie Hobbs, public information officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department, said the wooded property on which Carter was found in the 4800 block of Blackwater Road is listed in his name.
Carter, 51, was out of jail on $80,000 bond on two counts each of engaging in sexual activities with a child, felony first-degree sex offense of a child and felony indecent liberties with a child. If convicted of the most serious offense he could have faced life in prison.
After his arrest Carter was placed on administrative leave by the camp, operated by Chowan Baptist Association in northeastern North Carolina. As a condition of his arrest he was banned from the property of the camp and from having any contact with anyone under 18 except for his son. The association hired an interim director in January to run this summer's camping season.
Police accused Carter of sex offenses involving three separate minors. Carter told local media he was innocent. Survivors include Carter's wife of 26 years, Grayce, and two children. Carter reportedly had attended the high school graduation ceremony for his son the day before he took his life.
Before taking over as director of the camp, Carter served as a Southern Baptist missionary in Belize from 1997 to 2001 through short-term appointment with the International Mission Board. At the time of his arrest an IMB spokesperson said the agency, which has a zero-tolerance policy regarding child sexual abuse, had no knowledge of any allegation of abuse by Carter made prior to 2009.
"A suicide is always a tragedy, and my heart goes out to Rev. Carter’s family," said Christa Brown, Baptist outreach director for the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. "I also pray for the children and families who made the allegations."
Brown, who has called for the Southern Baptist Convention to develop a system for reporting and handling allegations of clergy sexual abuse, said the convention "should conduct a professional assessment of the allegations and should pro-actively reach out to provide assistance to any who may have been wounded, whether here in the United States or in Belize, where Carter previously worked for the International Mission Board." ..Source.. by Bob Allen

According to court documents, Webb was arrested three days before his death, on March 1, and charged with felony possession of child pornography and felony production, publication, sale or financing of child pornography involving a child younger than 15.

Registered Sex Offender Dead in Jail
12-16-2009 Virginia:FAIRFAX, Va. - A 44-year-old convicted sex offender is dead after police say he committed suicide in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
Paul Antonio Calvan was caught at Fair Oaks Mall allegedly using a video camera stuffed inside a shopping bag to videotape a 20-year old-woman in a dressing room at Victoria's Secret last Friday night.
"She sees him," Fairfax county police officer Bud Walker tells Fox 5 News, "catches him doing this, and chases him out of the store and then calls police."
The man got away, but Officer Walker says Calvan came back the very next day and with camera in bag went to the Express store right across from Victoria's Secret.
"At this point," Walker says, "folks who were involved in Friday night's incident alerted some of our plain-clothes officers who were located in the mall, and that's when they intercepted him as he attempted to leave the mall."
Calvan was arrested and taken to the jail. Just after midnight Monday, police say Calvan was found with a bed sheet wrapped around his neck and tied to the jail cell door. He died at a hospital 22 hours later.
Calvan was arrested at Fair Oaks Mall 12 years to the day after being convicted of aggravated sexual battery, a crime his neighbors say involved a young girl.
Calvan was a registered sex offender on probation and unemployed at the time of his death. He lived with his father in Arlington County. A neighbor says Calvan got out of prison about a year ago.
"It's kind of a sad ending to this story," next door neighbor Chad Ciri told us. "Would have liked to have seen him be able to work his way out of such things but, such is life."
Police say they are certain Calvan's death is a suicide. ..Source.. by Bob Barnard

VA- Accused child molester kills self before expected guilty plea
4-25-2009 Virginia:A 40-year-old Springfield man committed suicide in the Alexandria jail just hours before he was expected to plead guilty to filming a 15-year-old girl as he sexually abused her, an Alexandria sheriff’s spokesman said Monday.
Don Douglas, known as “Uncle Donte” to the victim and her several siblings, had convinced the girl to mix sleeping pills into her parents’ drinks so she could sneak out earlier in the evening to see him, according to documents filed in Alexandria’s U.S. District Court.
Family members told investigators that Douglas had become a close confidant and they viewed him as their pastor, although he was not formally linked to any church.
Douglas was first arrested Oct. 4 after he brought the victim to a Fairfax County police station where the girl reported the sexual abuse. After meeting with Douglas and the girl, police charged Douglas with abusing her. The charges escalated to federal charges after pictures of the girl were found on Douglas’ computer and linked to interstate trafficking of child pornography.
On Nov. 17 Douglas was ordered to remain in the Alexandria jail without bail because he had already fled from similar charges in Texas, U.S. District Judge Ivan D. Davis wrote in the order.
In the early morning hours of Jan. 12, jail guards conducting a routine check discovered Douglas had hanged himself in a shower, sheriff’s spokesman Harry Covert said. Douglas was pronounced dead at Inova Alexandria Hospital at 3 a.m. Jan. 12. He was expected to appear in court later that day to plead guilty to the charges, court documents said.
Alexandria police are investigating the suicide as part of standard procedure, and the Alexandria sheriff has started an internal review, Covert said.
Douglas had grown close to the victim’s family after he had started visiting with them in May.
A month later, the victim and her sisters spent a night at Douglas’ Springfield home, court documents said. While there, Douglas had sex with the 15-year-old. He continued to meet with her through Sept. 29 at his home and in a Pennsylvania hotel room.
At one point, Douglas complained to the victim that he had to wait too long for her to sneak out at night to see him. The victim said she couldn’t leave until her parents were asleep. Douglas advised her to put sleeping pills in her family members’ drinks.
Police said they later found several broken capsules of Sleepinal in the victim’s house. ..Source.. by Freeman Klopott, Examiner Staff Writer

VA- Officials: Missing Missouri man committed suicide
9-16-2008 Virginia:POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. | A southeast Missouri man who fled a year ago after being charged with child sodomy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to authorities in Virginia where his remains were found.
John Dunivan, the former Butler County clerk, was accused of sodomizing a young girl.
Remains found earlier this month near Hungry Mother State Park in Marion, Va., were positively identified through the use of dental records as Dunivan, Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Phil Gregory said.
Highway patrol investigators had been asked to forward forensic information to the chief medical examiner's office in Roanoke to either identify or exclude Dunivan after a human skull was discovered Aug. 31 by hikers on private property near a remote area of the park.
The skull, according to authorities, was located about a mile and a half from where Dunivan's truck was found along Interstate 81, on the western edge of Virginia near Marion. The truck had been found there July 20, 2007 by a Virginia State Police officer, who was checking on an abandoned vehicle.
The rest of the skeleton was found Sept. 1 by investigators under several layers of brush in what appeared to be a "makeshift survival shelter," Smyth County Sheriff's investigator Bill Eller said.
A revolver and a passport, later identified as belonging to Dunivan, were found near the remains, Eller said.
Dunivan was 61 years old when he was charged in July 2007 in neighboring Ripley County with first-degree statutory sodomy involving an 11-year-old girl.
According to a probable cause statement by a Highway Patrol officer, the girl told investigators that she had oral sex with Dunivan "too many times to count" at numerous locations, including at Dunivan's Ripley County property, in Poplar Bluff and at a motel in Jefferson City, which is about 250 miles to the northwest.
A 12-year-old girl also told investigators that Dunivan had touched her genitals on the outside of her clothing, according to the probable cause statement, but that incident did not result in the sodomy charge. ..News Source.. by AP

9-19-2008 United Kingdom:
A SEX offender killed when his van burst into flames left a note vowing to take out as “many police as I can”.
A jury inquest heard how Terence Langrell packed the white Ford Transit with three proprane gas cannisters and petrol.
Then, on August 1 last year, the 42-year-old “baited” officers into a slow pursuit around the streets of south Liverpool.
Five officers were injured as they approached the van in Park Road, Toxteth.
Liverpool Coroner’s Court heard how Langrell was given an official caution for attempting to procure an act of gross indecency with a 14-year-old in Flint, North Wales.
A registered sex offender until December 2004 he developed a hatred of officers.
One fragment of a note found in the car read: “You lot abuse your powers and do what you want, you are wrong. I will make you pay for the last six years.
“I will kill as many police as I can.”
The BSM driving instructor lived with his parents in Leasowe.
He was reported missing on March 27, 2007, but was spotted travelling in the Shetland and Orkney Isles.
Shortly before 10pm on August 1 officers began to follow Langrell after his driving outside Smithdown Lane was described as “suspicious”.
The pursuit took police through Granby Street, Warwick Street and Ullet Road, before Langrell mounted the kerb in Park Road.
Witness Paula Wright described looking out of her dining room window and seeing the driver was covered in “blue flames”. ..News Source.. by Kevin Core
