Man wanted in Cleveland found dead by authorities in Columbus

8-31-2012 Ohio:

A man wanted in Cleveland on rape and kidnapping charges was found dead this morning in a Weinland Park home by members of a fugitive-apprehension team.

Columbus police said it appears that William Wynn, 33, of Cleveland shot himself before he could be arrested by the team.

According to police, members of the U.S. marshals-led Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team went to 1302 N. Sixth St. at 7:45 a.m. to arrest Wynn. Authorities had learned that he had been staying there with a woman for several weeks.

The woman answered the door and told team members that Wynn wasn’t there. She allowed them in to search, and authorities found Wynn dead in the basement.

The team members did not hear any gunshots and neither did the woman, who had been upstairs, said Columbus homicide detective Ron Custer.

Police haven’t determined when Wynn shot himself or whether he knew marshals had found him. The investigation is ongoing. ..Source.. by Theodore Decker

Man responsible for 1994 murder commits suicide

8-28-2012 Iowa:

A man who kidnapped, raped and murdered a Johnston woman in 1994 has killed himself in prison, authorities said.

Jerry Lee Proctor, 42, hung himself Friday at maximum-security Anamosa State Penitentiary, the Iowa Department of Corrections said. An autopsy was being conducted to confirm the cause of death as asphyxiation.

The body of Patricia Howlett, 38, a mother of two, was found in November 1994. She had been raped and beaten. Her throat had been slit and her body set afire in a softball complex north of Des Moines.

Proctor was arrested over a year later before being convicted of first-degree murder and beginning his life sentence in 1997.

Investigators later tried to tie Proctor to other killings, but he denied involvement. He also denied killing Howlett.

Corrections Department spokeswoman Lettie Prell said Proctor was housed in a close security unit, which requires a higher level of supervision than the general population. Prell said she did not know what materials Proctor used to hang himself, or why guards didn’t thwart the suicide.

Prison employees responded quickly, she said, got Proctor down and got him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead 45 minutes later. ..Source.. by DesMoinesRegister.com

Man Fatally Shoots Himself After Attempted Sexual Assault and Police Standoff

8-20-2012 California:

Santa Cruz Police responded to a report of an attack at a private residence on Mountain View Avenue on Sunday morning, at approximately 11:44 a.m.

When they arrived at the residence, they learned that the victim, a 32-year-old woman who was in town to run the Wharf to Wharf, had been taking a nap on the couch when she awoke to the man ransacking the house.

The woman, who was home alone, confronted the intruder, and at this point he attempted to strangle and sexually assault her, according to Santa Cruz Police.

The woman had no weapons and fought viciously for her life, according to Steve Clark, Deputy Chief of the SCPD. She was successful in fighting off the suspect twice during the attack, which Clark said was very violent.

Eventually, the victim broke free, running to a neighbor's home to call the police.

Officers matched the description of the attacker to a man who lived in the neighborhood: Richard Andrew Glanzman, Sr., 55.

Officers searched the suspect's home, and found live ammunition was spilled on the floor of a bedroom, and the suspect barricading himself in the room.

After securing the perimeter, officers began attempted to contact Mr. Glanzman, verbally and even telephoning the house. Glanzman failed to respond. Meanwhile, approximately 20 nearby homes were evacuated.

The SCPD's Emergency Services Unit (ESU) was called to organize a hostage negotiation team, and simultaneously obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect.

The arrest warrant charged him with Attempted Sexual Assault, Attemped Homicide, Burglary, and False Imprisonment with a bail amount of $1,000,000.

After the arrest warrant was obtained, the ESU made entered the home around 6:30 p.m., finding Glanzman deceased in an upstairs bedroom. He sustained a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The suspect shot himself with a semi-automatic weapon, according to Deputy Chief Steve Clark.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the scene of the attack as well as the scene of the suicide. At this time it is not yet known if the suspect stole anything from the house where he attacked the victim. It is also unknown what time the suspect may have shot himself.

"Nobody heard a gun shot. But depending how it was done, it's entirely possible that it could have been muffled," said Deputy Chief Clark.

The victim was treated for her injuries at Dominican Hospital and is in recovery.

"I can't say enough about her bravery," said Deputy Chief Clark. "She fought for her life, and won. It was a very violent attack."

SCPD is also looking into the entire history of the suspect.

"We only had contact with him once, and it was for a non-criminal issue," said Deputy Chief Clark. ..Source.. by Maria Grusauskas

Top Provo teacher dies, subject of child porn probe

Police investigation is clearly faulty, they never proved any of Zimmerman's equipment contained anything illegal. Checked for police reports in 2015, none found. Sad case!

8-15-2012 Utah:

PROVO -- An award-winning Provo elementary school teacher who died over the weekend remains the subject of a child pornography investigation.

According to sources close to the investigation, Amelia Earhart Elementary fifth-grade teacher Jason Zimmerman is being investigated for downloading numerous files suspected of containing child pornography. Sources have confirmed that a search warrant was issued and that Zimmerman's computer has been sent to an out-of-state forensic lab for analysis. Officials do not yet know if the suspected child pornography depicts any local victims.

Zimmerman died last week at his father's home in Idaho, a number of weeks after the search warrant was served, but the investigation into what is on his computer continues. Details regarding Zimmerman's death were not immediately available Wednesday and no official statement had been released by local police.

Wednesday evening, the school held a meeting focusing on helping children deal with grief. During the meeting, Provo School District superintendent Keith Rittel stated that he read the information the Daily Herald reported earlier in the evening and that the information was consistent with the district's understanding of the situation. Rittel also said that as of 2 p.m. Monday the investigation into Zimmerman had not uncovered anything "that would result in charges," though Rittel acknowledged that the investigation was unfinished. In addition, school officials do not know the official cause of Zimmerman's death.

Man charged with child porn kills himself in cell, jails official says

8-14-2012 West Virginia:

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A West Virginia corrections official has confirmed a report of a suicide at the South Central Regional Jail in Charleston.

Paul O'Dell, deputy director of the state's Regional Jail Authority, said Joseph Daniel Albohn, 54, of Kanawha County, was found dead in his cell at about 2 a.m. Tuesday. O'Dell said Albohn apparently hanged himself with a bed sheet.

Albohn was sent to the jail on Aug. 1 on child pornography charges, O'Dell said. He said Albohn had been on a suicide watch, but that a psychologist had determined it was safe to take him off the watch on Aug. 10.

"When they're on suicide watch, they have nothing [they could use to harm themselves]," O'Dell said. Albohn would not have had access to bed sheets while on suicide watch.

O'Dell said Albohn was not back in the general prison population at the time of his death.

The West Virginia State Police is investigating.

According to a criminal complaint on file in Kanawha County Circuit Court, a family member turned Albohn in after finding a laptop computer with images of children engaged in sexual activity hidden under a nightstand in Albohn's bedroom. According to the complaint, the family member called Albohn while police were present and confronted him about the computer.

Albohn told the relative he had stopped looking at the images several months before and had hidden the laptop, according to the criminal complaint. He also reportedly had said he thought about destroying the laptop.

Albohn told the relative the Jerry Sandusky child-rape trial influenced his decision to stop looking at the images. In June, Sandusky was convicted on 45 counts of sexually assaulting 10 boys over a 15-year period while serving as an assistant football coach at Penn State University.

In February, Albohn filed for bankruptcy, court records show. He listed his assets as $122,900 and liabilities as $107,435. ..Source.. by Rusty Marks

Clay County suspect believed dead in Oklahoma

8-12-2012 Oklahoma:

A man believed to be Marlin Jay Anderson, the former city manager of Bellevue accused of sexually assaulting a 3-year-old girl, was found dead in the Wichita Mountains in Oklahoma on Friday.

The man died of an apparent gunshot wound. The death is being investigated as a suicide. The Comanche County, Okla., Sheriff's Office has not released the identity of the man pending pathology results. A vehicle registered to Anderson was found at the scene. According to a source, Anderson's family was notified of the death Friday.

Anderson, 54, was arrested Aug. 3 after a month long investigation into allegations he had molested a young girl on Nov. 14, 2011. He was charged with aggravated sexual assault. Anderson was released Thursday on a $75,000 bond posted by his attorney.

Investigators also believe Anderson sexually assaulted a woman, now 35, from the time she was a young girl until she was 16 years old — a crime for which the statute of limitations has expired, said Clay County Sheriff Kenny Lemons.

The woman is the mother of the girl.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office opened the investigation on a tip from the owner of a business that provides polygraph services in Dallas.

According to a probable cause affidavit provided by the Sheriff's Office, the business owner said Anderson asked to take a polygraph in reference to a sexual assault.

The man stated that during the interview process of the polygraph, Anderson admitted to having a sexual relationship with the woman over a period of 10 years.

A CCSO investigator called the woman in for an interview. During the interview, the woman said that her daughter had made comments that led her to believe Anderson also had assaulted the girl.

A forensics investigator from the Wichita Falls child advocacy center Patsy's House interviewed the girl.

The probable cause affidavit stated that when asked by the forensics interviewer, the girl indicated that she had been assaulted.

The woman provided investigators with an email sent to her from Anderson in January. The email read, "I do not believe that I am a pedophile and the legal description for pedophile does not fit me. I am a child molester and I don't need a definition to know that."

The email continued, "The second horrible act was possibly worse than the first; I have let you carry the burden of that horrible act for nearly your entire life. Not only did I not claim responsibility for what I did and I also tried to put some of the blame on you." ..Source.. by Matt Kelton

Parolee is Found Dead After Allegedly Leading Police on a Massive Manhunt in Buffalo

7-26-2012 New York:

(Buffalo, NY) A single shot ends a manhunt in Buffalo's east side, after police spent hours searching for 28-year-old Demone Frazier.

Authorities tell Eyewitness News that Frazier managed to get a hold of his parole officer's keys during a routine check at 50 Gatchell Street.

Frazier, a convicted rapist and level three sex offender, allegedly stole the parole officer's vehicle at about 7:45 Thursday morning. It was later found abandoned on Best Street. Frazier fled on foot, with a gun from his home in tote.

Several different agencies, including Buffalo Police, US Marshals and the US Border Patrol, combed the streets looking for Frazier.

With helicopters flying overhead and weapons drawn, neighbors were left stunned.

Mary Ward, who lives on Buffalo's east side, told Eyewitness News the helicopters woke her up. She looked out the door and a police officer approached her, warning to lock her doors. Ward adds "he said we're looking for somebody with a gun. I said well nobody came here."

At about 10:50 in the morning, a gunshot lead police nearly three miles away to 239 Hempstead Avenue.

Buffalo Police Chief Dennis Richards says "there was a shot that was heard by police, by agents and at that point as I said we have to retreat and call for swat in this surrounding, in this surrounding, there's apartments there's people that need to be evacuated."

Prepared for the worst, the SWAT team moved in. Residents were pushed farther away from the home.

In the end, officers found Frazier dead.

No one's more surprised than those who knew him.

TJ, an acquaintance of Frazier's, said "he stuck out to me because he was a real polite sweet boy, and I just thought he was nice."

TJ added she never knew of Frazier's criminal past.

Police say the parole officer had been working with Frazier for some time.

The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision are now investigating how this happened. They are also providing counseling to the parole officer. ..Source.. by WKBW News

The Real Story Behind The Suicide Of An Escaped Sex Offender

8-11-2012:

Buffalo, N.Y. - 2 On Your Side has learned that a local parole officer nearly lost her life on Thursday during an incident with a sex offender that ended wtih the offender's suicide.

The drama began at about 7:45 Thursday morning when Demone Frazier's parole officer went to his home on Gatchell Street on the city's East Side for a routine check on him.

What happened next was anything but routine. A source in law enforcement tells us that once inside the home, the parole officer spotted a gun, that she and Frazier went for it at the same time with Frazier wrestling it away from her.

Frazier, knowing that he had violated his parole by having a gun and that he would be sent back to prison, then pointed the gun at the parole officer, threatening to kill her.

Somehow, our source tells us the parole officer was able to talk Frazier out of shooting her.

Frazier then took the officer's keys and fled in her car.

He eventually made his way to the Kenfield-Langfield projects where his girlfriend lived.

His girlfriend wasn't home, but Frazier was able to get into another nearby apartment.

Members of law enforcement, knowing that Frazier's girlfriend and other friends of his lived there, began searching a number of apartments.

Within a short period of time, the search team unknowingly went in to the unit Frazier was in.

They were on the main floor when suddenly our source tells us, they heard a single shot from the basement.

At this point, the search team didn't know whether Frazier was firing at them from below, whether the gun had accidentally gone off, or whether Frazier had committed suicide.

Members of law enforcement covered the front and back doors of the apartment in case Frazier tried to escape.

They heard nothing from the basement for more than an hour.

It was then that a decision was made to send in the heavily protected members of the SWAT team.

They entered the apartment, looked down into the basement and that's where they saw Demone Frazier dead, laying at the bottom of the stairs. ..Source.. by Scott Brown, Reporter

Police: Firefighter Who Killed Self Knew He Was Target Of Sex Probe

8-2-2012 Connecticut:

A Groton firefighter who killed himself on the UConn-Avery Point campus last week had been told hours earlier by police that he was the target of an investigation into complaints he had sexual contact with teen boys at the gym he owned.

City of Groton Deputy Police Chief Thomas Davoren confirmed Thursday that multiple police departments were looking into the complaints against Timothy Devine, who owned the CrossFit Groton gym.

Davoren said the allegations involved only Devine. He would not comment further.

A source familiar with the investigation said that police had started investigating the day before Devine killed himself on July 23. The source said at least three victims, 16-18 years old, came forward to police.

A detective contacted Devine and told him about the allegations and tried to arrange an interview. At about 5 p.m., a few hours after the initial contact with Devine, police received a report of a despondent man with a weapon.

Police determined that Devine had gone to the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus by tracing his cellphone. They found it in his car around 10 p.m. in the campus parking lot.

A short time later, state police have said, officers found Devine standing on rocks. He was armed with a handgun and would not drop it, they said. At times, he waved the weapon.

The state police tactical team and hostage negotiators were called to the scene. A trooper and a local officer talked to Devine for more than four hours trying to get him to put down the weapon, but he refused.

The state police SWAT team fired bean bag ammunition and used "flash-bang" grenades in attempts to get Devine to give up. But around 4 a.m. Devine threw the cellphone away and shot himself. His death was ruled a suicide by the state medical examiner's office.

The state police Eastern District Crime Squad is still investigating the case and a final report will be turned over to New London State's Attorney Michael Regan.

Devine, 30, owned the CrossFit Groton gym on Bridge Street in Groton. Devine wrote on his Facebook page that he got hooked on the CrossFit method of fitness training after he tried it through a co-worker at the firehouse.

Devine was a firefighter with the Poquonnock Bridge Fire District for four years. He was buried earlier this week, with firefighters from all over the area attending.

The gym has been closed since Devine's death.

Dale Saran, general counsel for CrossFit, said the company does not require a background check but "we do have a process through which people become CrossFit affiliates [that] includes a personal essay."

"We've toyed with the question of whether it should be a necessity for a CrossFit owner to go through a background check," he said. "We've had very few incidents in 4,500 affiliates. It's horrible if there's any truth to the allegations." ..Source.. by DAVE ALTIMARI and Beau Berman and Anthony DiLorenzo

Felony Sex Crime Suspect Stabs Himself In Neck Before Being Shot By Cops

7-30-2012 California:

MODESTO, CA - A 68-year-old felony sex crime suspect has died after before being shot by police earlier this month.

On July 12, David Mendez was visited by a uniformed officer and Detective Steve Anderson, who works on the Special Victims Unit. Mendez was a suspect in a sex crime and Anderson had interviewed Mendez previously. He was there today, with the other officer, to arrest Mendez.

Mendez answered the door and briefly spoke with the two men. He said he knew he would be arrested after they had completed their investigation and that he had written a confession. Mendez then walked to a nearby desk and retrieved a 12-inch “diver’s knife” that he used to repeatedly stab himself in the neck. According to Lt. Rick Armendariz, Mendez “repeatedly thrust the knife in and out, holding the knife with both his hands.”

Refusing to obey the officer’s demand to stop doing that, Mendez was Tased. This did not prove to be effective and Mendez continued to stab himself. When he rose the knife above his head and made a movement toward the officers, Anderson shot him. This did prove effective, and Mendez fell to the ground and released the knife.

He was rushed to the hospital but would die from his injuries this past Thursday from either the stab wounds, the gunshot wound or both. I looked around a bit but couldn’t find any information about what sex crime Mendez allegedly committed, but according to reports, a suicide note was found in the desk in which Mendez confessed to the crime and implied committing suicide by cop. ..Source..

Officer Involved Shooting Suspect Dies

David Mendez, the suspect in the July 12th officer-involved shooting, died from his injuries yesterday.

On Thursday, July 12th, at about 2:30 P.M., Modesto Police Detective Steve Anderson and Officer Ron Lemings went to a residence in the 1200 block of Muirswood Way to follow-up on a felony sex crime investigation. Detective Anderson, a 12-year veteran of the Department, is assigned to the Special Victims Unit, which investigates crimes involving domestic violence, crimes against children, and sexually-based crimes. Officer Ron Lemings, a 24-year veteran of the Department, is currently assigned to the Operations Division as a uniformed patrol officer.

Detective Anderson had been investigating a case, wherein David Mendez, a 68-year-old Modesto resident, was the suspect of a felony sex crime. (The specific information and details of the felony sex crime case will be withheld in order to protect the identity and confidentially of the victims.)

Detective Anderson had been in contact with Mendez and during a recent interview, Mendez admitted his involvement in this crime. Mendez was aware he was the focus of the investigation and his eventual arrest once the investigation was complete.

On July 12th, Detective Anderson and Officer Lemings went to Mendez’s residence to arrest Mendez. When officers arrived, they contacted Mendez, who was home alone. Mendez opened the front door and the officers stood by the entryway as they spoke to Mendez. Mendez told the officers he had a written confession note for them and walked to a nearby desk in the front living room area, near the front entryway.

Mendez opened the desk drawer and removed a large aquatic “diver’s knife”, approximately 12-inches in length. Mendez immediately stabbed himself with the knife in his throat area and began to repeatedly thrust the knife in and out, holding the knife with both his hands.

Officers ordered Mendez to drop the knife and Officer Lemings deployed his taser in an effort to immobilize Mendez and prevent him from causing further injury to himself. The taser was ineffective as Mendez continued to stab himself.
Mendez then removed the knife and raised it above his head in a threatening manner, as he faced the officers. Mendez was within 10 feet of the officers, who were still standing near the front entryway. Detective Anderson responded to the threat by discharging his firearm and striking Mendez.

After Mendez was shot, he fell to the ground with the knife in his hand, refusing to let it go. After repeated demands to drop the knife, Mendez complied and was taken into custody. He was immediately provided medical attention and transported to a local hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

On Thursday July 26th, detectives were notified by medical staff at the hospital that Mendez had succumbed to his injuries. This morning, the Stanislaus County Corner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Mendez. The cause of death remains under investigation pending review of all medical records.

During the follow-up investigation, crime scene investigators located a hand-written letter in the same desk where Mendez had retrieved the knife. The letter was a confession and suicide note, detailing his actions in the felony sex crime and his intentions to kill himself rather than be arrested.

Although we will never know Mendez’s true intentions or motives for his erratic and violent behavior the day of the shooting, evidence suggests Mendez may have intended to threaten the officers and force them to respond to the threat with deadly force, in what is commonly referred to as a “suicide by cop”.

Three separate and independent investigations remain on-going, which is standard in any officer-involved shooting investigation in Stanislaus County. The Modesto Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation into this incident, Stanislaus County District Attorney’s office is conducting an independent criminal review of the incident and the officers’ actions, and the Modesto Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit is conducting an administrative investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Neither of the officers involved were injured during this incident. Detective Anderson was placed on paid administrative leave, also standard procedure after an officer is involved in a shooting incident. He has since returned to full duty as a criminal investigator within the Special Victims Unit. ..Source..
