FL- Body ID'd As Tampa Sex Offender

1-29-2009 Florida:

BAYPORT - A registered sex offender who lived in Tampa was the man found dead in a parked sport utility vehicle on Wednesday, according to the sheriff's office.

Guy Cevetello, 43, was discovered slumped behind the wheel of a white Mazda by a jogger around 9:45 a.m. on Bayou Drive. The narrow road is bounded by a salt marsh and connects Pine Island Drive to State Road 550, near Bayport Park.

The medical examiner is still investigating, but signs point to suicide, said Sgt. Donna Black, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

A news release defines those signs as a note, weapon and reason. Black declined to identify the weapon out of respect for the family.

"They're the ones that really suffer," she said.

Cevetello was on federal probation at the time of his death for possession of child pornography, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's sex offender database. ..Source.. by KYLE MARTIN, Hernando Today

VA- Accused child molester kills self before expected guilty plea

1-27-2009 Virginia:

A 40-year-old Springfield man committed suicide in the Alexandria jail just hours before he was expected to plead guilty to filming a 15-year-old girl as he sexually abused her, an Alexandria sheriff’s spokesman said Monday.

Don Douglas, known as “Uncle Donte” to the victim and her several siblings, had convinced the girl to mix sleeping pills into her parents’ drinks so she could sneak out earlier in the evening to see him, according to documents filed in Alexandria’s U.S. District Court.

Family members told investigators that Douglas had become a close confidant and they viewed him as their pastor, although he was not formally linked to any church.

Douglas was first arrested Oct. 4 after he brought the victim to a Fairfax County police station where the girl reported the sexual abuse. After meeting with Douglas and the girl, police charged Douglas with abusing her. The charges escalated to federal charges after pictures of the girl were found on Douglas’ computer and linked to interstate trafficking of child pornography.

On Nov. 17 Douglas was ordered to remain in the Alexandria jail without bail because he had already fled from similar charges in Texas, U.S. District Judge Ivan D. Davis wrote in the order.

In the early morning hours of Jan. 12, jail guards conducting a routine check discovered Douglas had hanged himself in a shower, sheriff’s spokesman Harry Covert said. Douglas was pronounced dead at Inova Alexandria Hospital at 3 a.m. Jan. 12. He was expected to appear in court later that day to plead guilty to the charges, court documents said.

Alexandria police are investigating the suicide as part of standard procedure, and the Alexandria sheriff has started an internal review, Covert said.

Douglas had grown close to the victim’s family after he had started visiting with them in May.

A month later, the victim and her sisters spent a night at Douglas’ Springfield home, court documents said. While there, Douglas had sex with the 15-year-old. He continued to meet with her through Sept. 29 at his home and in a Pennsylvania hotel room.

At one point, Douglas complained to the victim that he had to wait too long for her to sneak out at night to see him. The victim said she couldn’t leave until her parents were asleep. Douglas advised her to put sleeping pills in her family members’ drinks.

Police said they later found several broken capsules of Sleepinal in the victim’s house. ..Source.. by Freeman Klopott, Examiner Staff Writer

Man convicted of spousal rape found dead in apparent suicide

1-21-2009 Korea:

A South Korean man, the first to be convicted of spousal rape in the country, was found dead Tuesday in an apparent suicide, police officials were quoted as saying by Yonhap News Agency.

The 43-year-old man, identified by his surname Lim, was found by his mother hanged at his home in southern Busan around 2:40 p.m., according to the police.

The Busan District Court sentenced Lim last week to a 30-month prison term on a three-year suspension for forcing his 25-year-old Filipina wife to have sex at knifepoint. He had claimed innocence and said he was determined to appeal.

He married his wife in 2006 through an international marriage broker and was indicted last year.

In 2004, a district court found a Seoul man guilty of sexually assaulting his wife. Lim's case marked the first time that the nation's court acknowledged nonconsensual sex between spouses as rape. ..Source.. by The KOrea Herald

AK- Kenai prison inmate dead in apparent suicide

1-14-2009 Alaska:

An inmate at the Wildwood Correctional Center in Kenai is believed to have killed himself early this morning, a spokesman for the Department of Corrections said.

Authorities identified him as Edgar Carle, 52.

The inmate had been in Wildwood about a year awaiting a trial on a charge of sexual abuse of a minor, said Richard Schmitz, department spokesman. A court hearing in the case was scheduled for this afternoon.

Carle didn't leave a suicide note and there was no immediate sign he was in emotional distress, Schmitz said. Other inmates were in their cells sleeping. Authorities don't believe there was any foul play or that anyone else was involved.

Carle had an inmate job at the prison as a night janitor and was on duty this morning. He was last seen alive around 1:30 a.m. doing his job, Schmitz said. Twenty minutes later, a correctional officer found he had hung himself, using a cord from his cleaning machine, likely a floor buffer, Schmitz said.

Medics and troopers were called. Medics tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at 3:06 a.m.

Troopers will conduct an official investigation and the department also does its own internal investigation.

OR- Forest Grove rapist found dead in Ontario prison suicide

1-9-2009 Oregon:

A Forest Grove man serving a 42-year sentence for sexual assault was found dead in an apparent suicide about 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario, the Oregon Department of Corrections said.

Richard Dennis Cantu, 41, alarmed Portland-area residents in 2000 by escaping from a sheriff's deputy and hiding for more than a day.

Cantu's death "is still being investigated," said Liz Craig, a corrections spokeswoman, "but we're calling it a suicide because he was found hung in his room."

Cantu admitted breaking into three homes in Forest Grove between 1996 and 1999 and attacking a 65-year-old woman, a 43-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter, and a 52-year-old woman. He was caught outside the last woman's home.

Minutes after Cantu pleaded guilty, he ran from the deputy who was escorting him from the Washington County Courthouse. He was captured a day later by three men who chased him off a MAX train from Hillsboro. ..Source.. by Michael Russell, The Oregonian

IN- Inmate's death under investigation

1-8-2009 Indiana:

PENDLETON — Prison and county officials are investigating the death of a convicted rapist at Pendleton Correctional Facility late Tuesday, but don’t suspect wrongdoing.

Neil Potter, prison spokesman, identified the inmate as Anthony C. Kamman, 34. He declined further comment until an autopsy is performed Thursday at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.

Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said an ambulance was dispatched to the prison shortly before 7 p.m.

Coroner Ned Dunnichay said officials with his department were called to Saint John’s Medical Center at about 9 p.m. Kamman was pronounced dead at the hospital. Dunnichay said there were no obvious signs of trauma. Foul play is not suspected in Kamman’s death. Dunnichay said Kamman was discovered in his prison cell.

Kamman was sentenced to 50 years in prison in May after being convicted of rape. He was charged with the crime in 2004, according to the Indiana Department of Correction.

He was scheduled to be released in November 2031, according to the DOC. He has previous convictions for burglary, possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance.

Inmate With Local Ties Had Cocaine, Heroin In His System

PENDLETON — A Pendleton prison inmate found dead in his cell in January died of an overdose of illegal drugs, according to toxicology test results.

Madison County Coroner Ned Dunnichay said Pendleton Correctional Facility inmate Anthony C. Kamman’s death was caused by combined drug intoxication, and has been ruled

accidental.

The coroner said Kamman, 34, had cocaine, methadone and heroin in his system. He had ingested enough of each drug that any of the three could have been lethal, Dunnichay said.

Kamman was found unresponsive in his cell on Jan. 6, and pronounced dead at Saint John’s Medical Center a few hours later.

An autopsy performed two days later proved inconclusive and officials awaited toxicology test results before ruling on the cause and manner of Kamman’s death. Dunnichay previously said there were no signs of foul play and drug overdose was suspected.

Neil Potter, Pendleton prison spokesman, learned of the toxicology results when contacted by The Anderson Herald Bulletin late Thursday, and didn’t know the status of any potential investigation into how Kamman got the drugs.

“I don’t know the specifics in regard to any internal investigation,” Potter said.

Kamman, who was born and raised in Decatur County, was sentenced to 50 years in prison in May 2008 after being convicted of rape in Jennings County. He was charged with the crime in 2004, according to the Indiana Department of Correction.

He was scheduled to be released in November 2031, according to the DOC.

Kamman also had previous convictions for burglary, possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance. ..Source.. by Shawn McGrath
